Jacob SPECK Sr.1390 was born about 1754 in Germany.1390 He served in the military in 1780.1390 He died on Aug 16, 1780 in Camden, South Carolina. Jacob Speck I was born about 1745 in Germany (Date is only an undocumented estimate). He was living before 1775 in York County, Pennsylvania. There were other Specks living in York County, Pennsylvania, but no documented connection has been made. He may have immigrated with other family members. Date of immigration is unknown, however, it was prior to his marriage and the American Revolution. He served in the military in 1780 in the Militia.20 It is not known for sure in which state he served. Almost every able bodied man who wasn’t a part of the Continental Army under the command of George Washington, served in the area where he lived to help protect settlements. At times these militia troupes were also called upon to fight in battles of the Revolution. This was the case for Jacob Speck. He died on 16 Aug 1780 in the Battle of Camden, South Carolina.21 In July 1780, Gen. Horatio Gates was at Camden, South Carolina, commanding a force of 1400 Continentals. He was joined by Militia troupes from Virginia and North Carolina. The British general, Cornwalis, was also in Camden with an army of 3,000. On August 16th Gates and Cornwalis found themselves facing each other across a field. The two sides advanced on each other, with the British regulars opposite the Carolina militia men. After a few minutes, the Carolina line gave way. This led to a general crumbling of the American lines, and what few were left of the American army were forced to retreat. This defeat at Camden has been likened to "the darkest hour before the dawn. " The Americans lost over 2,000 men, one of which was Jacob Speck, while the British losses amounted to 324. He was married to Catherine Keefer about 1775 in York County, Pennsylvania.

Spouse: Catherine KEEFER. Jacob SPECK Sr. and Catherine KEEFER were married in 1775 in York County, PA.1390 Children were: Jacob SPECK, Michael SPECK, George SPECK.

Jacob SPECK1858 was born on Jul 5, 1776 in York County, PA.1390 He was baptized on Aug 18, 1776 in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, York Co., PA.1390 He died in 1862 in Clinton Co., KY. Jacob Speck U2 was born on 5 Jul 1776 in York County, Pennsylvania.3 He was baptized on 18 Aug 1776 in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, York Co., Pa.. He served in the military in 1812 in Capt. William Cross’ Company, in Barbee's Regiment of the Kentucky Militia.4,5 Enlistment was 23 Aug 1812 for six months service during the War of 1812. The company traveled through Newport to St. Mary's River, where they encamped for some 4 months. During the winter they suffered greatly from the severe weather, lack of adequate tents, and blankets. They were discharged on 23 March 1813. He was a farmer with 200 acres on Spring Creek in Cumberland Co., Kentucky. A Land Warrant was Filed on 15 Oct 1823.6 He was A member of the Clear Fork Missionary Baptist Church about 1830 in Albany, Kentucky.7 Jacob's wife, Nancy was mentioned in church minutes in 1805, therefore, they had likely been members of this church for many years. However, in the 1830s church records show that there was a disagreement regarding the missions program. Jacob, Nancy and Sally Speck apparently sided with the faction in disagreement and were excluded from the church. It is not known whether they later rejoined or attended another church of like faith. Two daughters, Anna & Agness, and a daughter-in-law, Polly, joined Wolf River at this time. He died about 1862 in Clinton County, Kentucky. He was buried in an unknown place.. Many of the Speck families fanned the fertile land adjacent to Wolf River and its tributaries, such as Spring Creek. In 1943 a dam was built for Dale Hollow Lake and the area was flooded. It is likely that a family cemetery was in this area covered with water. With the exception of a Speck infant, there are no others on the list of moved graves. Others may have had no marker or they were unreadable by this time. He was married to Nancy (?) about 1805 in Kentucky. Nancy Speck was mentioned in the minutes of Clear Fork Baptist Church in 1805, therefore we know they were married at this time and members of the church.
