John Augustine HAWKINS46 was born on 2 October 1833 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He died on 13 December 1909 in St. Louis, Missouri Hospital. He was buried in Miami, Missouri Cemetary - Grave at top of hill. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE:Cause of Death] Allen, John's brother, bought land in Saline County, Missouri in 1866 and sold it to John in 1869.
John was named for his grandfather, John Hawkins, and his great, great , grandfather Augustine Smith who was according to some one of the founders of Fredericksburg, Va . He was in Woodford County, Kentucky on October 2, 1833 and was the eldest of six children born to George Giles and Susannah Harrison Slaughter Hawkins.
John was the oldest son. He was two years old when he moved with his parents to Missouri and his family settled near Newark, Missouri. In 1852, he wrote his father a letter who at that time was serving in the legislature in Jefferson City, Missouri. During his father's absence he took care of the farm.
In a letter which was written to his father while in the legislature, John is described as "steady, regular, a little tinged with thickheadedness but can be safely congratulated on having recovered from the sad effects of hog killing and the 12 hours nap of Rip-Van-Winkle. He has done wonders to shape his composition."
He chose his first cousin, Susan Mary Burrus, whose mother Mary Davis Slaughter was the sister of his mother. Susan's father John Wallus Burrus died when she was only 11 years old. Her mother then married Henry Clay Bell, and it was in their home that John and Susan were married by the Rev. S.S. Perry. They were married near Salvisa, Kentucky. There were 12 children born to them, but there are records on 10. Susan was 16 when she married John who was 21.
One of these children Ida Matilda, who married Arthur Vance Young, was named after John's sister who died when only 12 years old. After he was married there are land deeds for him Mercer County, Kentucky and also Knox County, Missouri. He may have lived for a time in Knox, then moved t o Mercer and then to Saline County. Ida was described in a 1852 letter as "Matilda, my especial favorite and queen of mischief, is doing well considering the mobility and versatility of her character. She is more spirited than ever and is a decided wit.
There are land records which show he bought land in 1854 in Mercer. In Knox County, F-262, we find John A. Hawkins bought January 23, 1857 . SE qt Sec 21 T61 R 10. This was cancelled April 26, 1864. In February 1865 John sold to Thomas A. Easton 380 acres for $3,400.
John Hawkins owned a farm in Saline County, just a few miles north of Miami, Missouri. The farm was very near the Missouri River. There were originally 220 acres, but he added more land, and also sold some. There was once a two story, colonial home with pillars on the property. It is no longer there.
John loved and raised fine saddle horses, and won several awards including a silver pitcher. He gave Ida Matilda a fine mare and a colt as a wedding present when she married Arthur Vance Young at this beautifu l home.
Susan Mary was five years younger than John, but he lived 25 years longe r . She had 12 children and died at age 46. A Clyde Young reports she died of fright. She was 16 when she married John who was 21. After Susan 's death he married Bettie Paxton of Anderson County, Kentucky on October 15, 1885. She was the aunt to J.C. Penney. Bettie and John had no children.
John spent his boyhood hears on a farm located about one-half mile from Newark, Missouri. His father Giles purchased the farm in 1835 or 36 when he moved from Kentucky. On November 1, 1865 he sold the farm to James T. Clement. An old family graveyard is on this land. Susannah died here, but her body was later moved to Saline County.
John died at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri after undergoing prostate surgery. He was 76 years old. John is buried with his wife Susan in the Miami Cemetery and their graves are at the top of the hill as you drive in. John's son, John Waller and His wife, and John's daughter Eva and Lena and her husband are buried on the same lot.
John made a will on May 19th, 1909 and it was proven on January 10, 191 0 . An inventory of John's property showed one lawn swing, one wheel bar row, one buggy and harness, hand tools, lawn mower, 36 chickens, 500 bushels of corn, 220 acres of farm land and a lot in Miami. He apparently had a large farm sale before he moved into town.
About 20 years before his death, he moved to town to school his children. He joined the Baptist Church at 17 and was a member of the Miami Baptist Church. He was made a deacon in the church in 1874.
