Another pioneer of the plains was called to his final rest last week when Benjamin Franklin See passed away after 89 years of sojourn here on this earth.
As a youth, he braved the long journey to the West Coast and Oregon with his parents to help build civilization in the Grande Rhonde Valley in Union County.

Benjamin Preston See131,1570,1571 was born on 25 August 1809 in Montgomery Co., Ky.. He died on 21 June 1877 at the age of 67 in Sullivan Co., Mo.. He was buried in Holliday Cemetary.127 Also Know As Preston. I promised to tell you the story of how the See clan got out west,so here goes. To start, you may or may not know that William See fought in the war of 1812,shortly after the war he died of a serious flu like cold. In 1812 congress passed a law that set aside 5.4 million acres for payment to the volunteers of the war. Elizabeth Auxier See, applied for her husbands share as was granted land in Putnam Co. MO And Schuyler Co. MO. She took her two boys to MO and assigned the land to them Benjamin in Putnam Co. and Nimrod in Schuyler Co. Benjamin farmed his land for awhile, then went to Iowa to farm some land there, but after two years he sold that land an returned to the Put man Co land.[during the time he lived in Iowa Elizabeth See was shown on the farm census as living in the household] During the civil war Benjamin was quite vocal about how he favored the South in the war, which did not set well with some of the local Boys,as a result he and some his family lives were threatened,so in the middle of one night they loaded everything they could into some Ox cart's-wagon and fled ac cross to line into Iowa then headed west to Oregon,he took the whole family wives and all he left in such a hurry that Benjamin F. See had to talk his lady friend to go along, they were married a few days latter in Iowa. It took them four months to reach Oregon, they settled in the Grand Round Valley,Union County ,Oregon.,They remained there till after the civil war was over or seven years best we can figure. Them most returned to Sullivan Co. MO.,except for Benjamin F. See he had became a respected farmer in the valley and had already started a good sized family also Francis Marion See,had acquired land in the Wallowa valley Wallowa Co Oregon and also had a family started .The third brother to remain was Nimrod [Coon]See,and he was making a name for himself in the central Idaho Timber County[now know as Deary Idaho.]. At their parting they would never see each other again[exception] Benjamin Franklin would visit his brothers and sister in 1904-first time they had been together in thirty yrs. The trip to Oregon was a real adventure for the family and told their family's of it many times and is almost always mentioned in their obits. Benjamin and family returned to MO. to nothings as his land had been sold for back taxes during the civil war,but they all seemed to manage as most went on to be respected farmer - rancher..
