Zeno ran a general merchandise store, beginning in 1917.  He later ran aflour mill which was sold in 1923 to his brother, Guy T. Hoots.  Zenomoved to Winston-Salem, and established a flour and whole-sale grocerybusiness called "Hoots Brothers."  Lula attended the Normal School atOxford, NC later returning to teach at Enon, Yadkin Co., and atLewisville, Forsyth Co.  After Lula's death in 1948 of cancer Zenodonated $40,000 to Yadkin County toward the building of a hospital whichwas named in her honor - the Lula Conrad Hoots Memorial Hospital.
