Farmed the Old Daniel Hoots place.  In 1898 he acquired the David Shoreplace of over 400 acres at Forbushelementary School, fronting on OldHighway 421. Dave Shore was Lucy Jane Shore's brother,  "Nettie's Uncle.Dave had a mill and a still on Loony Branch north of the house down thehill.  Nettie spent part of her childhood in the Dave Shore house afterher mother died young and her father remarried.  The house is one of theshowplaces of the county.  Dave Shore built it in the mid 1880s, usingbrick nogging inside the frame walls.  The Hootses remodelled itextensively after Winfield bought it.  It is pictured in the HistoricalArchiteture of Yadkin Co. book.  Winfield paid for the place with goldmined on Harmon creek by his father.
    Winfield engaged in farming, milling and merchandising.  He and hissons kept a store by the roadside.1  BIRT
