James A. Zachary was a Justice of the Peace in Fentress Co. Tn. He was too old
to serve in the Army during the war, but he supported the Union side. All of
his older sons joined the Union Army, and all of them except James Marion
died or were killed during the war. James A. Zachary was killed at his home
by a rebel guerilla band, led by Champ Ferguson, on June 1, 1862, and was
buried in the cemetery on the family farm. The cemetery is known as the Little
Zachary cemetery. The land is owned today by Cooper Beatty, and is located south of highway 42, about one mile northeast of Byrdstown, Tn. Also killed with James was Fount Zachary. Fount is called a nephew in some sources, and a grandson in others. Additional info may be found in the several books about Champ Ferguson. As a strange as it
seems, within the year, Champ Ferguson had killed men from 3 generations of the Zachary family.
