For those that asked for more details. My direct line goes back to Peter Hanks. He served in the PA militia during and after the Revolutionary War. From about 1774 thru 1781 he was at various locations in the Wheeling/Ft. Henry area (present day WV) By 1786 he had moved his family to Limestone/Maysville Ky. In Febuary 1789 Peter and his son William made a trip to a sight that would later become Morgan's Station.
From "In search of Morgan's Station" by Harry G. Enoch, 1997, page 30. A statement made by James Wade drawn from the Draper manuscripts is quoted. [Regarding the commencement of Morgans Station on Slate Creek near present day Mt.Sterling] " The first persons that came, stopped and unpacked their horses it was said, on the tenth day of February 1789. Tom Montgomery, Si Hart, George Naylor, Robert Daugherty, and Peter and William Hanks at first, and afterwards James Douglas and John Holmes, came that season to Morgan's Station and planted corn....The talk of most or all of these persons when they came was that they were going to raise corn and in the fall bring their families." [end of quote]
Peter and William did not return to Morgans Station but they did return and settle on Slate Creek. They show up on the Clark County tax lists up until the formation of Montgomery County in 1797 at which time they began showing up on the Montgomery Co tax lists.
Of Peter's children there are Peter Jr. (m. Isabella Stewart), John (m. Barbara ?????), William (m. Mary/Polly Stewart), Absolom (m. Melinda Tribble), Samuel (m. Nancy Wyatt), Ruth (m. Hubbard Marshall), Isabella (m. John Holmes) and Savilla (m. James Craig) [some believe Savilla could be a dau of John's] After the county formation changes, Absolom's residence fell into Clark county. Peter Hanks Jr. lived in Mont. Co off & on but by 1811 he was in Knox Co, Indiana. He died at the battle of Tippecanoe and his children are well documented. John Hanks continued to live in Mont. Co up until his death around 1839. Rev Shane interviewed him shortly before his death and that is preserved in the Draper manuscripts. Very interesting stuff. John's children were mostly girls but not well documented. I have a few tidbits but would love to have more solid info on his family. William Hanks is my line. He moved to Gibson Co, IN around 1810-1812. Samuel Hanks is another one I would love t!
o have more info on. There are several marriages that show up in Mont Co that are said to be his daughters, but I have had a hard time getting anything to verify this. I have limited info on Ruth and Elizabeth. The children of Savilla Hanks & James Craig are fairly well documented. They moved to Marion Co, IL which is where my direct line eventually moved to.
Now there is another group of Hankses besides Peter's. When William Calk first came out to the Mt. Sterling site he was accompanied by an Abraham Hanks. Associatted with Abraham is Abraham Jr., Fielding, George and William along with Sarah and Polly Hanks. According to research done by Adin Baber in the '50s & '60s, Abraham Sr is the father of Nancy Hanks and the others named are siblings. I am not sold that his research is entirely correct but the Nancy Hanks issue is one of the most controversial issue I have seen. There are literally hundreds of different claims about her parentage. My greater interest is in determining the correct rerlationship between Peter and Abraham. Myself and a descendant of Fielding Hanks have matched on DNA testing so we know a relationship exists, we just dont know the degree.
