Military records of the Civil War include a Pvt. James Butram who enlisted in Company H, 13th Cavalry, CSA, at Sparta, White County, Tennessee in September 1862. He furnished a horse valued at $100.00. His record ends abruptly in Oct. 1862. This outfit may have also been know as the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment or as Dibrell's Regular Tennessee Cavalry.
His card for May to June 1863 shows him present in Company K, 25th Infantry, CSA, and states "Was dismounted at McMinnville by Col. Nixon May 1, 1863. He did belong to the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment and deserted the same some time previous and was assigned to duty in the 25th Tennessee Regiment." He remained with this outfit from May 1, 1863 to July or August 1863, then deserted again. The record shows that his home was in Putnam County, Tennessee at this time. He surrendered at Sparta, Tennessee on March 28, 1864. He took an Oath of Allegiance to the USA on June 12, 1865, which he signed with his mark, and he was allowed to return.
