James B. "Jim" BUTTRUM

1  _UID 3EB02EEE71246E44AFF3C6C6F9CBEC679675

James is in the 1860 Putnam County, Tennessee census; the 1870 Overton County, Tennessee and the 1880 White County, Tennessee census, District 11 is listed as a farmer.

The 1900 Fentress County, Tennessee census, 3rd district, shows his 2nd wife, Katherine and children.  It appears that she was a widow by 1900.

Military records of the Civil War include a Pvt. James Butram who enlisted in Company H, 13th Cavalry, CSA, at Sparta, White County, Tennessee in September 1862.  He furnished a horse valued at $100.00. His record ends abruptly in Oct. 1862.  This outfit may have also been know as the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment or as Dibrell's Regular Tennessee Cavalry.

His card for May to June 1863 shows him present in Company K, 25th Infantry, CSA, and states "Was dismounted at McMinnville by Col. Nixon May 1, 1863.  He did belong to the 8th  Tennessee Cavalry Regiment and deserted the same some time previous and was assigned to duty in the 25th Tennessee Regiment." He remained with this outfit from May 1, 1863 to July or August 1863, then deserted again. The record shows that his home was in Putnam County, Tennessee at this time. He surrendered at Sparta, Tennessee on March 28, 1864. He took an Oath of Allegiance to the USA on June 12, 1865, which he signed with his mark, and he was allowed to return.
