Print MessageTHOMAS BILBERRY
The first record I have found of Thomas Bilberry was in the Brunswick Co. Va. Court Order books in 1762. He was the plantiff against Nancy or Anne Blanks. The case was continued twice in 1762, and the third time she never appeared in court in 1763, there was an attachment awarded against her estate. The next record I have is him purchasing 160 acres, more or less ,in the Parish of St. Andrews, in the County of Brunswick, Virginia, from William Woodley on March 27, 1763, for the sum of 25 pounds. Next is 16 February, 1769, when Thomas Bilberry, Planter of the County of Brunswick Co. Virginia, sold 150 acres, more or less, to Hannah Hill for the sum of forty pounds.
Now is this the same Thomas Bilberry that is the Father of Isham, Lawrence, and Johnnie? He sold his propery in 1769 and there's no other record of him in Brunswick Co. Va. James Bilberry sold the last of his property in Brunswick Co. Va., also in 1769. James moved in with Nathaniel Bilberry in Edgecombe Co. N. C. The next record of Thomas is in Chatham Co. N.C. There has been on many Web Sites the information that Isham was born in W. Orange, N. C. (WHERE IS W. ORANGE,N.C.?) I can find no record of Thomas being in Orange Co. N.C
Below is the earliest record, I found of Thomas Bilberry in North Carolina. He was in the Chatham County Militia in 1772. But, there's something people don't realize. It was a Loyal British Militia. There's nothing wrong with that. We weren't at War. Later, he joined the revolutionary Army. There are, also, on many Web Sites the information that Thomas was at the Battle of Kings Mountain, and, also, at the Battle of Almance. The next time you're told that, ask for proof. I'll gladly pay anyone that can furnish a document with Thomas's name at either place.

THOMAS BILBERRY
ESTATE RECORDS OF EDGECOMBE CO. N.C. 1730-1820BILBORY (BILBROW), MARGARET, inventory taken by John Batts, exr., March 19, 1787, April Ct. 1787. Account of sale by the exr. held the same day. Sarah Bilbory was a buyer. Mentioned cash in the hands of Thos. Bilbory, decd, Jan. Ct. 1788. Account current with the exr., Aug. Ct. 1788.
Do you see after his name, it says decd? I thought that was a misprint, but every record I found said the same thing. He was alive during the April Ct.,1787, but deceased when the Jan. Ct., 1788 convened. I have a copy of the original estate sale held by John Batts, executor.
I, also, have a copy of the deed, where Thomas Bilbory bought a certain tract or parcel of land from James Scurlock on 28 July 1788 in Chatham Co. N. C. for the sum of 50 pounds. Ask yourself this, where was he from 1769 till 1788. There's no record of him going to Edgecombe Co. with James. Which son was living in Chatham Co. that he could have moved in with? I don't believe Thomas, senior, ever bought any property. The book by Charles Eldridge is not the Bible of Genealogy. If you want facts, YOU have to uncover them. Sitting at a computer, copying information from web sites, does not make you a researcher. There's so much erroneous information being passed around, that you can just about find anything you want.

These are the only N.C. records of Thomas I could find. I've searched Libraries and Courthouses all over N.C. and Va. I've never been able to locate a Land Grant or Deed for Thomas in N.C., except for the one in 1788.
Would you like to hear my theories on John and Isham? I'm not bashful, just ask.
