Much of the information concerning the REV. JOHN BUTTRAM c o mes from his obituary, which appeared in "The Southweste r n Christian Advocate," Nashville, Tennessee, 11 Septembe r 1 841.  John was born 1 June 1803 in Rowan County, Nort h Caro lina, went to Virginia, then Kentucky, then to Bleds oe Coun ty, Tennessee, where he married Mrs. Phebe Miser Br own in 1 821.  John was licensed to exhort on 5 October 1830, and in 18 3 1 he moved to Rhea (now Meigs) County, Tennessee. He wa s l icensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church o n 25 J uly 1836.  He died at the age of 37 from a brain tum or whic h grew through his skull.  The was a mass of brai n tissue " Protruding considerably from the right lateral v entricle o f the brain".  He obituary is graphic in the des cription o f his symptoms, and relays his continuing care a nd ministr y to all those around him, up until a short tim e before hi s death.  John had been a large land owner, selling 480 acres in Mei g s County in 1836 and 1837, and after the death of Phebe , th e Meigs County court found that the executor of her es tat e had fraudulently traded it and the persons who owed m one y to the estate had moved away or were insolvent.

PHEBE died three years after Rev. John, leaving seven orph a n children.  Two children had preceded her in death, an d tw o more died within four years.  There are several docu ment s in Meigs County concerning the guardianship of thes e chil dren.  Eventually, only three sons lived long enoug h to pro duce children who survived to adulthood. Since a n umber o f persons in successive generations died of tubercu losis, i t is thought that some persons in this household s uffered f rom the disease.

ELIZABETH was the granddaughter of James Bedwell, who died in 1771 in Kent County, Delaware.  After his death, hi s sons moved to Rowan County, North Carolina.  In November 1800, the year in which Eliza married Levi Buttram only two of James Bedwell's sons were enumerated in the census: James and Elijah Bedwell.  However, Elijah was the only one who had a daughter in the correct age category to be this "El iza".  Elijah Bedwell married Mary Seenea (Seney , Seancy, Seaner).
