Andrew Jackson "Jack" BUTTRAM Lt.

ANDREW was a Lt. in the Confederate Army and was shot an d d ied during the Croxton's Raid at the Battle of Munford , Ala bama, 23 April 1865. It is believe that he was the l ast Co nfederate soldier killed in battle during the Civi l War. H e is buried where he fell, just where the Talladeg a road fo rks in the town of Munford. He was buried the fo llowing da y by citizens of the town. His grave is the onl y evidenc e remaining of the battle. There is a monument to the memory of A.J. Buttram, Confede r ate soldier, in the little town of Munford, Georgia. I t wa s erected by the John T. Morgan Chapter of the Unite d Daugh ters of the Confederacy. The inscription is: "In Memory or, Andrew Jackson Buttram, Confederate Soldie r , Killed here April 23, 1865, During Croxton's Raid, Erec te d by Veterans, and their descendants". Andrew was assinged to Capt. B. C. Raney's Randolph City R e serve, Company E, Low's Regiment which was assigned to Be nj amin Hill's Brigade at Blue Mountain. Capt. Raney's ent ir e Company was captured at Munford except for Lt. Buttra m wh o was killed. Those captured were held at Taladega, A labam a until 30 May 1865 when they were paroled.Source, Howard Theo Buttram

JAMES Morgan moved from a Carroll Co., Georgia to Clebur n e Co., Alabama in 1855. He was a private in B. C. Raney ' s Randolph City, Alabama Reserves. He was captured 23 Ap ri l 1865 at Munford, Alabama and imprisoned at Teledega, A lab ama and paroled 30 May 1865. Source #20

WILLIAM is in the 1860 Cumberland Co., Tennessee Census, b u t his wife is not listed. She must have died before 186 0 . His children are listed. William is in the 1870 Bledsoe Co., Tenessee Census with h i s wife Nancy and the children from both marriages. He is in the 1880 Roane Co., Tennessee Census, #339-349, a n d listed as a railroad hand. On 6 August 1861 William BUTRAM accompanied Elijah Derosse t t and two of Elijah's sons from Cumberland Co. Tennesse e t o Livingston, Overton Co, Tennesse to join the Confeder acy . The men of Compnay A, 28th Infantry Regiment were kn ow n as "The Cumberland County Confederates". The William Butram who joined with the Derossetts initial l y was shown as age 30, but less than one year later on Ju l y 18, 1862 he was given a medical discharge and shown a s ag e 38. This William Butram, stated he was born in Wayn e Co . Kentucky. Source #20
