Clay City Times, Vol 8, Thursday, April 23, 1903, No. 17. Went for his bride with guns. A special from Irvine says "Bert Rogers obtained a marriage license at Stanton, Powell County, to marry Miss Sudie Hatton, fifteen years old, representing to the clerk, it is said, that the girl was a widow. Rogers in company with a party of friends proceeded attempted an elopement. B.F. Hatton, the girl's father, with his son, hearing some shots, warned the party to come no nearer. The warning was unheeded and fire was opened on both sides. Rogers, Luther Snowden, B.H. Hatton and H.K. Watson were wounded. Hatton and his son escaped uninjured. Warrants have been sworn out by both sides and the matter will be carried into the courts.
