Ernest attended Emory & Henry College, Emory, and a busines school at
Lychburg
before being employed by Consolidation Coal Company at Jenkins, KY.
During
WWI, he served in the 314th Field Signal BAttalion at Cherbourg, St.
Michel
Sector, Meuse Argonne, and Treves Sector (Army of Occupation).  After
his
discharge in May 1919, he returned to his job at Jenkins, KY.  On
11/16/1921,
he was appointed deputy US Collector of Internal Revenue with an
office at
