From "The Higbee News" dated 16 Dec 1898--G. W. Lessley, who left here Saturday for Potsboro, Texas, to see his aged father, James Lessley, who has been sick for some time, writes that his father died Saturday evening and that he only reached there in time Sunday evening to see him buried. Mr. Lessley, at the time of his death, was over 80 years old.

13 May 1910--CARD OF THANKS--Through the columns of the NEWS we wish to return our sincere and grateful thanks to the good people of Higbee and vicinity for their many kindnesses and sympathy during the illness and death of our son and brother.  G. W. Lessley and Family.

Friday, 8 Jan 1915--BIRTHDAY DINNER--On Christmas day G. W. Lessley's children and grandchildren to the number of twenty-one met at his home to surprise him and help him celebrate his 69th birthday.  The gathering came as a total surprise to Mr. Lessly.  All came with well filled baskets.  The morning was spent in exchanging greetings and making merry.  At the noon hour all were invited to the dining room where the table was loaded with Christmas turkey with all the trimmings that go with it, the centerpiece being a cake on which were 63 candles.  After dinner when all were feeling at their best all repaired to the front porch where their pictures were taken.  After spending a very pleasant afternoon the guests returned to their homes, wishing Mr. Lessly many happy returns of the day and prosperous New Year.  Those present: J. E. Lessly and family, G. E. Lessly and family, Oreon Lessley and family, Mrs. Bessie Lessly and family, Miss Annie Lessly and Claud Lessly.

Friday, 3 Dec 1915--G. W. Lessly received a letter from a niece living at Pottsboro, Texas, the first of the week, informing him that his brother, John H. Lessly, of that place was stricken with paralysis Friday, his entire right side being affected.

Friday, 21 Nov 1919, Vol 33. No 31--GROCERY CHANGES HANDS--(Condensed)--Dennis & Gooch, who recently purchased the G. W. Lessly & Co. grocery stock, sold out last Saturday to Edmund Burke and Otho Robb, who will continue the business in the old stand.

Friday, 10 Feb 1922, Vol 35, No 43--SUFFERING FROM PARALYSIS--G. W. Lessley, one of our best known citizens, suffered a slight stroke of paralysis one day last week, and has since been confined to his home, though able to be up and about, his speech only being effected, and that only partially.  He was not quite so well yesterday, we are sorry to say.  Mr. Lessly's host of friends join the NEWS in the hope for his speedy recovery.

Friday, 17 Feb 1922, Vol 35, No 44--G. W. LESSLY NO BETTER--G. W. Lessly, who is suffering from paralysis, with which he was stricken ten days ago, was not so well yesterday, his legion of friends will be sorry to learn. While his speech was slightly effected at first, it is much more so now, indicating that the paralysis is gradually increasing.  Everything possible that medical science and loving care can do for him is being done, but the worst is feared because of Mr. Lessly's 76 years.  All join the NEWS in the prayer for his recovery and that he may be spared to his children and his friends for years to come.

Friday, 24 Feb 1922, Vol 35, No 45--ANOTHER GOOD MAN CALLED HOME--G. W. Lessly Passes Peacefully Away at His Home Saturday From Paralysis--It again becomes the sad province of the NEWS to chronicle the passing of another good citizen, neighbor and friend--G. W. Lessly, who died at his home in this place at 3:50 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 1922, from paralysis, with which he had been stricken ten days before.

While the stroke was very light, his speech being only partially affected, and his family and friends were hopeful that he would shortly recover, it was soon seen that it was not to be, as the paralysis gradually extended from day to day and he grew momentarily weaker, until he passed peacefully away at the hour stated, surrounded by all of his children.

George Washington Lessly was a native of Randolph county, having been born near Renick on December 24, 1845, and spent all of his almost 77 years in Higbee and immediate vicinity.

He was married to Miss Annie E. Pattrick on March 6, 1870.  They were the parents of six children.  Mrs. Lessly dying Jan. 3, 1882, he was married to Miss Augusta Palmer on October 20, 1883.  to this union two children were born.  Mrs. Lessly died November 7, 1888.  On February 19, 1890, he was married to Miss Nancy C. Burton, who died December 21, 1893.

The surviving children are Jas. E., George E., Miss Annie and Oren Lessly, all of this place.  Augustus died some fifteen years ago and Bertha in early childhood.  Clarence, who left for the West some twenty-five years ago, is believed to be dead, as he has not been heard from for twenty years.  Miss Lucy, the oldest of the two children of his second marriage, died at the family home some ten years ago.  thirteen grandchildren and two brothers, both of Oklahoma, also survive.

Mr. Lessly was one of Higbee's very best citizens, and was the town's first business man, having opened a store near where the West Side Hotel now stands in 1874, later selling a half interest to the late S. Lessly and erecting the brick now occupied by Mark Murphy's hardware store.  Selling his interest in the store in 1886 to the Higbee Coal & Mining Co., he moved to his farm a year or two later, returning to town in 1904, where he had since lived, and was engaged in the grocery business for several years with
his son, Oren, retiring some three or four years ago.

He was a Christian gentleman of the highest type and was loved and respected by all who knew him, and all feel a personal loss in his passing.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday by the Rev. J. J. Hutchison, pastor of the Christian church, of which deceased had been a member since early manhood, the crowd being one of the largest seen here in years on a similar occasion.
Interment was made in the city cemetery.  An extended obituary will appear later.

Friday, 17 Mar 1922, Vol 35, No 48--IN MEMORY--In loving memory of G. W. Lessly, who silently crossed the dark river of death Feb. 18, 1922.
Leaves have their time to fall, And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath.  But thou hast all seasons for thine own, Oh! death.
After life's fitful fever, Sleeps one of earth's noblemen.  One by one they pass on, mother, sister, brothers and lastly the dear father,
leaving fond memories of the parent, who for so many years had been both father and mother.  Loving, generous, kind, always thinking the best of and for his children, always cheerful and deeply interested in his neighbors and friends' welfare.  Honest and just, eager and anxious to help further a cause for the uplift of humanity or aid a fellow man.   He has left noble monuments to his children in the life he lived.  Sweet memories of him as they go about their daily duties ever a light to guide them on and upward, to higher and better living, sadly missing his wise counsel and loving advice, ever by his example keeping in the straight and narrow way that leads to life everlasting, and to merit the plaudit, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of the master."  There is no death, the stars go down, To rise again on some fair shore,  And there in heaven's jeweled crown, They shine for evermore.  A FRIEND.

James Elkins LESSLY

James Elkins Lessly moved to Higbee, Randolph County, Missouri soon after his marriage to Emily Harris.  Their seven children were born and raised there.   In 1876 James Elkins and his wife Emily along with some of their children migrated to Texas.  They settled on an eighty acre farm which is diagonnally across from the present Hagerman Baptist Church.  They obtained this farm by a grant from Governor John Ireland.  This farm was owned later by Samuel E. and Daisy Lessly McGuire, who moved there after their marriage in 1902.

The grave of James Elkins Lessly, his wife, sons John H. and Andrew P. Lessly, and daughter-in-law are in the Georgetown Cemetary near Pottsboro in northern Texas, several miles west of Dennison.

According to notes by N.B. Forrets McGuire, one L.D. Lessly of Dennison, Texas believes that his grandfather, John M. Lessly, who lived near Springfield, Missouri, was in the group of seven covered wagons that migrated to Texas in 1876 with James Elkins and Emily Lessly.

According to James Alan Lessly, James Elkins raised corn and mules while owning a couple of slaves.

Although the 1850, 1860  and 1870 census records confirm family information on Emily's birthplace, they differ with information on her birthdate.  According to  the date of birth inscribed on her tombstone, Emily was born in 1819 and should have been about 31 years of age at the time of the 1850 census not 27.  Likewise if family information were correct, Emily should have been 41 and 51 in the 1860 and 1870 census. Given the consistent disparity between 3 census records and family information, it is likely that Emily's birthdate is incorrect on her tombstone.  A more likely birthyear for Emily (based on the census information) would be 1821.

His occupation is listed as farm laborer.  According to the census he can both read and  write.  The census also indicates that he has been married for two years.

Friday, 9 July 1915--Twins, a girl and a boy, were born on the 7th, to G. E. Lessly and wife.

Friday, 5 Dec 1919, Vol 33. No 33--G. E. Lessly, met with a very painful accident one day last week, and one that could very easily have cost him his left hand.  He had put in the day killing hogs and was handling a backbone when his son, Roy, came down on it with an ax which struck Mr. Lessly on the wrist, cutting a gash about two inches long, and which required several stitches to close, but which fortunately severed no tendons.   Had Mr. Lessly's hand been resting on something solid and not in the air when the blow fell, it would have no doubt been severed.

Friday, 8 June 1923, Vol 37, No 7--G. E. Lessly made his little daughters the happiest children in the community last week by the purchase of a Shetland pony.

Willa Mae DAGGS

In the 1880 census for Randolph County Missouri there is a Daggs family that may be Willa Mae's family.  They are located on page 9, Supervisor's Dist. No. 5, Enumeration Dist. No. 113, Moniteau Township, dwelling number 71.  The head of household is a G.W. Daggs, white male, age 49, occupation carpenter, born in Virginia.  His wife is Ella, white female age 26, born in Missouri.  The only child of the household is a W.M. Daggs, white female, age 4, born in Missouri.  The approximate birthdate for W. M. Daggs would be 1876.  It seems likely this could be Willa Mae's family.

MRS. G. E. LESSLY, of Renick, who was called here last week by the illness of her sister, MRS. DAVIDSON, returned to her home Monday.  The latter is improving slowly.

Friday, 28 Oct 1921, Vol 35, No 28--Mrs. G. E. Lessly was quite painfully hurt Wednesday as she was coming to town to church with Mr. Lessly, the team they were driving becoming frightened at an automobile and running away, Mrs. Lessly being thrown out.  She was brought to the office of Dr. T. Friday, 29 Feb 1924, Vol 37 No 45--Misses Delphia, Addie and Orphia Lessly visited
their brother, Roy, and family at Clark last week.

Thursday, 28 Apr 1927, Vol 40, No 51, Pg. 5 Col. 2--LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Misses Addie and Orphia Lessly, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Lessly, who have been suffering from diphtheria for the past week, are much better, we are glad to state.  It was feared Tuesday night of last week that Miss Addie could not live through the night, and but for the fact that Dr. C. F. Burkhalter remained at her bedside all night
and fought for her life by keeping her throat clear, she likely would have passed away.  A trained nurse was secured the next day, and each has received every care and attention.  An air-tight quarantine was established as soon as the nature of the malady was determined, and there is no fear of the disease spreading.  Where they contracted the disease is a mystery.  So far as is known there are no other cases in this section.

Thursday, 5 May 1927, Vol 40, No 52, Pg. 1 Col. 3--SCHOOL NOTES--The high
school has been very sorry to lose Nellie Sperry, Addie and Orpha Lessly from their
midst.  Nellie has gone to Marshall to live with her parents.  Addie and Orpha have been
very ill with diphtheria, and will be unable to return to school.

Friday, 9 July 1915--Twins, a girl and a boy, were born on the 7th, to G. E. Lessly and wife.

Friday, 25 Aug 1916--PAULINE LESSLY--"She came to raise our hearts to heaven; She goes to call us there."  Just a little more than a year ago the Lord gave into the keeping of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Lessly twin babies, a beautiful little boy and girl, who were promptly named Paul and Pauline, respectively, and all the friends and relatives of this estimable family rejoiced with them in their good fortune.  However, the Lord could not see fit to let them keep both babies, so last Thursday, Aug. 17, 1916, He called little Pauline home to be with Him in heaven. This time the friends and relatives met and mourned with the sorrowing family. but as they gazed at the little waxen figure so peaceful in death they could almost know God's reason for calling her home--the angels were her fit associates.  In heaven she will be waiting to welcome her loved ones home.  That will be her mission, and it is hoped the bereaved ones may be guided by her pure innocence.  May they find comfort in God's word, which teaches that if His people will but trust in Him all will be well and some day they shall all be reunited in heaven.

Friday, 11 Apr 1919, Vol 32. No 51--PAUL LESSLY--"He came to raise our hearts to Heaven, He is gone to call us there."
Paul Lessly, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Lessly, was born July 7, 1915. Died April 3, 1919.  It will be remembered little Paul was one of a pair of twin babies, his sister, Pauline, having died when about a year old. The love and attention the parents gave both babies was all give to Paul when Pauline was called home, and Thursday night when Paul was taken the parting was doubly hard.  The little fellow was in his usual good health until Thursday night, when he was suddenly seized with convulsions and passed away before morning.  He is survived by father and mother, four sisters and two brothers. Interment in the city cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.

"Emma was the oldest girl, and she and sister Dora Lee had a double wedding.  Emma married Gus Leslie and Dora Lee married Wiley Dickerson Marshall on Christmas day, 1895.  Emma took Summer Sickness the following summer, and died."

"My sister Emma and I were married in a double ring ceremony.  Emma's beau Gus Lessley was always on time or early.  Those day our beaus usually arrived about 2:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m., and left about 10:00 p.m. We never had supper for them, but we had cake and ice cream in the summer and cake or pie in the winter time and apples always in the winter. - However, on our Wedding Day, I looked out the window and saw a two-horse buggy drive in the barn lot.  It was about 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon, and Mother began teasing sister Emma about Gus being so early; however, I learned is was Wiley.  Gus got there about 4:00 o'clock.  We were not to be married until 5:30 p.m.  But the roads were knee-deep in mud, and several people came in four-horse wagons.  Many came on horseback.  We had supper after the ceremony.  I shall never forget the bustle and stir it caused to get supper ready for so many guests....We stayed at our house all night and spent the second day at Gus Lessley's parent's home; they lived about seven miles from us."

Volume 30, No 43, Friday, 26 Jan 1917--During the absence of Mrs. Bessie Lessly from her home Tuesday evening, a lot of clothes which she had left too near the stove caught fire, and but for the prompt discovery of neighbors, who broke in the door and extinguished the flames, the house might have burned down.  The whistle at the light plant sounded the alarm, and in a few minutes the fire engines were on their way to the scene, being drawn by automobiles.  Practically no damage was done by the fire.

Carole,
I asked Mom about Lucy Bennett Lessly, and my hunch was right.   At a young age, Lucy was put in the mental hospital in Marshall, Missouri and lived there for the rest of her life.   I don't know what her illness was....it makes you wonder, because in those days it seems they would admit people who could have had a physical condition like deafness, etc.  Anyway, no other details on her.

the following is taken from the notes of Stiles Lessly circa March 1, 1970

Annie Lessly lived with her father until his death in 1922.  In addition to being housekeeper for him, she took care of Lucy during her long illness and Uncle Gus (William Augustus Lessly) during his fatal illness.  After her father's death she was married to Tom Williams of Higbee.  They bought a farm about five miles north of Higbee and lived there until Tom's death.  Annie then sold the farm and bought a house in Higbee and lived there until she had a stroke.  Her last two years were spent in a nursing home in Moberly.

A marriage license issued by the Recorder of Deeds for Randolph County, MO says that Annie E. Lessly and T. J. Williams were married on 28 July, 1924 at Moberly, MO.  The license is signed by the Christian Minister of Moberly, MO and witnessed by Maude Williams and Claude Lessly.  This Claude Lessly should be Annie's nephew Claude Kimborough Lessly.  The other witness, Maude Williams, would later become Claude's wife.  It is possible that Maude is related to Annie's husband T. J. Williams.

In the 1900 census for Randolph County, MO, Annie appears as a member of her father's household.  Her date of birth is listed as December 1881, her age as18 and her place of birth as Missouri.  The place of birth for both parents is also listed as Missouri.  According to the census she can both read and write and has attended school for 7 months.

In the 1910 census for Randolph County, MO, Annie appears as a member of her father's household.  Her age is listed as 28 and her place of birth as Missouri.  Both parents are listed as having been born in Missouri. No occupation is listed for her.  She is listed as being able to read, write, and speak English.  Annie's brother "Gus" is also listed (as William A.) in the census.  The census was taken about a month before his death.

the following is taken from the notes of Stiles Lessly circa March 1, 1970

Oreon Lessly grew up on the farm and soon after they (the Lessly family) moved to Higbee, he was employed for a time as telegraph operator at the Katy depot, then he had a job in the Wabash railroad shops in Moberly. He was married to Cassie Blansett of Higbee.  They had two daughters Livonia, who died as a small child, and Loreta who is married to Waldo Malone and living at Clifton Hill, MO.  Oreon died about 15-20 years ago, and Cassie three years ago.

According to James Alan Lessly, after Oreon and Cassie were married they boarded at a house owned by the mother of Omar Bradley in Moberly, Missouri.

In the 1900 census for Randolph County, MO, Oreon appears as a member of his father's household.  His date of birth is listed as August 1886, his age as 13, and his place of birth as Missouri.  The birthplace of both parents is also listed as Missouri.  According to the census he can both read and write and has attended school for 7 months in the last year.

Friday, 24 Oct 1919, Vol 33. No 27--Oren Lessly is again back in harness selling groceries, having taken charge of that department in Andrews & Burton's big store, succeeding E. L. Bradley.  The firm couldn't have found a more competent or accommodating man for the place, and that Mr. Lessly will keep his department right up to the minute and add many new customers goes without saying.  We are not advised as to what Mr. Bradley will do.

Friday, 11 Aug 1922, Vol 36, No 17--While out motoring a few evenings ago, Mr. and Mrs. Oren Lessly got a good scare at the top of Sunshine hill, their car turning over, caused by Mr. Lessly applying the brake when the car began to skid.  No damage was done to car or occupants.

Friday, 20 Mar 1925, Vol 38 No. 47, pg.5, col. 1--O. P. Lessly sold his residence property
in the south part of town last week to Ed Dennis, and the latter sold his residence to D.
M. Sunderland.  Mr. Lessly has purchased the J. T. Randolph residence on Railroad street
and will take possession in May.

Friday, 3 Feb 1922, Vol 35, No 42--BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION--Gathered at the home of Mr. Mose Blansett in the southwest part of town on last Sunday, Jan. 29. some 22 persons, all of one mind at the same time, decided that Mr. Blansett should have some one to help him celebrate his 66th birthday.  So coming from all directions with filled baskets and buckets, they soon had all things ready.  The table was spliced to its full length.   The snow white linens added to its appearance and with some extra cooking done at his home a dainty dinner was soon spread, such as loving hands so well know how to prepare.  Uncle Mose, as we shall now call him, was heard to exclaim that he
wished birthdays came more than once a year, for the reason that he enjoyed this one so well.  We are quite sure he doesn't care to grow old at all.  Any way he loves to have company.  After dinner he showed us into a room where he had a nice chifferobe he made himself.  Sure was a beauty.  A portion of our time was passed away listening to the violin, on which Uncle Mose is a professional.  At a late hour in the afternoon the guests departed wishing the host many more such happy days.  Those present were:  Dave  Robb and wife, Ira Kirby and family, Mrs. B. F. Cook, Joe Lay and wife, Eddie Dennis and family, Allen Lyons and wife, Oren Lessly and wife, Mrs. Mary Shaiffer and Jeff Robb.  A GUEST.

The thing about the flu epidemic reminds me what my dad told me George almost died from the flu, while in the army.  He stayed behind, while his outfit headed  across the Atlantic.  During the crossing, the armistice was declared.
