Arrived Nov. 17, 1741 on the ship "Europa" from Rotterdam, Holland by way of Cowls, England in Philadelphia, PA.
Some possible unverfied information (but according to Louis A. Grossin "The Gross Genealogy" published in 1972 says that Simon married Dorothea (possibly Danner) in Philadelphia around 1741 and they moved toLancaster PA where two daughters and son Theobald were born. After she died in Nov. 10, 1744 she was buried in the graveyard of the MoravianChurch, Philadelphia, PA and in Lancaster, PA on April 21, 1945 he married Veronica Mayer at Trinity Lutheran in Lancaster, Lancaster Co, PA. The marriage was also recorded in the Moravian Church records in Lititz. PA.
Simon surveyed land Aug. 1, 1751, Warrant #273, 50 acres in Rapho Twp.Lancaster Co., PA (Documented by Archives of the Commonwealth of PA) and is on the tax lists for Rapho Twp, Assessments 1751, 1756, 1758 p. 9,Peter Brasher, Collector. Simon is also listed as an "adjoiner" on several other deeds. These deeds are recorded in the book "LancasterCounty Deeds" and show him living near John Myers, (possibly JohannMayer?) Jacob Conrad, and Samuel Cunningham.
1752 White Oak Lutheran Church founded in Warwick Twp. and he islisted as one of the warrantees for the church and was one of 5 of the prime organizers/founders of the new church. (now St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Penryn, PA) The Evangelical Lutheran Church shared the building with the Reformed church - Simon and Adam Keener and Anthony Fishburn were the Lutheran founders and Daniel Schneider and Daniel Huberthe Reformed. He appears in the "Alms Book for the Evangelical Reformed Congregation in Warwick Lancaster County in the Year of Christ 1763, 9 January" - in this account book he is on a list of 29 people from both congregations who gave money for completing the schoolhouse. He promised 5 shillings.
Came to Surry Co. NC around 1767. Aug. 3/4, 1769 purchased land from Frederick Shore which contained 228 acres, part of a 500 acre Granvilleland grant obtained by Frederick Shore in 1762. Rowan Co. Deed book 7,p. 146, Vol. II. This land was east of Frederick Shore's land and on both sides of South Deep Creek. In 1984 part of this farm is owned andoperated by direct descendants.
Bob Cawly a descendant of Simon>Simon Jr.>Simon III>Mahala(m.Sherrel Chappel)>Charlotte (m. James Swaim) Charlotte had a family Bible in which was written "P. Gross of Burn Zurach, Switsland father of Symon." It is possible that this is Bern (Canton Berne) and Zurich,Switzerland - he may have lived in a small village between the two. Thereis also a Zurnach, Switzerland near Canton Berne - this may be the location. Also a village of Zurzach in Switzerland. My guess would be however that he was from Zurich. He arrived on ship "Europa" from Baden Germany 20 Nov 1741. Ref: "Pennsylvania German Pioneers: Ralph Beaver Strqassburger, LL.D. Simon Gross surveyed land August 1, 1751, Warrant #173 50 acres in Rapno township, Lancaster County Pennsylvania (copy from archives of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. "Tax Lists Lancaster County Pennsylvania of 1751, 1756, 1758" p. 9 "Rapno township, Assements 1756, Peter Brasher, Collector; Simon Gross." In 1752 the White Oak Lutheran Church was founded in Warwick Township which was close to the property of Simon Gross. Simon is listed as one of the Warrantees for the church.
In 1767 Simon Gross, with his daughter, Sarah, and her new husband, Frederick Long, left the Lancaster county area and journeyed to Rowan County North Carolina. (now Yadkin County). On the third or fourth day of August 1769 Simon Gross purchased his first land in North Carolina which contained 238 acres. This was purchased from Frederick Shore and was on the south side of the fork of Deep Branch for 230 pounds, (Rowan County North Carolina Deed Book 7, pg. 146, Volume 11.)Surry County, North Carolina 1790 Census:
Simon Gross 1 male over 16; 1 male under 16; 1 female (Simon I ?)
Simon Gross Jun 2 male over 16; 3 male under 16; 8 female (SimonII - Lexa Groce line)
Devall Gross 1 male over 16; 4 male under 16; 4 female(line of Verne Groce)
William, Gross 1 male over 16; 2 female
John Gross 2 male over 16; 6 males under 16; 1 female.Surry County, North Carolina 1800 Census
Tevault Gross 1 male under 10; 3 males 10-16; 1 male 45 over; 1 female under 10; 1 female 10-16; 1 female 45 over.On the 3rd or 4th day of August 1769 Simon Gross purchased his first land in North Carolina which contained 238 acres. This was purchased from Frederick Shore and was on the south side ofthe south fork of Deep Branch for 230 pounds. (Rowan County, North Carolina Deed Book 7, page 146 Volume II, also the Yadkin County Historical Map.)
Since there was a Simon Groce, Theobald Groce, and a Peter Groce, in Surry (later Yadkin) County North Carolina who were probably near the same ages, I believe that Peter was also a child. Later in Cumberland County Kentucky, we find a Peter Gross there in the same time period which may have been a grand child of Simon number 1. No proof. cs
Early Times in Clinton, County, Kentucky Vol 1 by Jack Ferguson 1986
"Members of the Groce family were in Clinton county very early. John Groce had 200 acres surveyed on May 29, 1799, north of the present Albany, adjoining Philbert Wright and the Talbott tract. Between 1816 and 1818 Groce sold this farm to William Cross. Peter Groce had a tract adjoining that of John Groce.
The Groce family in this county goes back to two members of the family, apparently either father and son or brother,Sources:
