William came to Grainger Co, Tn. ca. 1788, with his parents, 5 brothers & 2 sisters. He & hisbrother John left Grainger Co ca. 1805 went to Giles, Lawrence & Hardin Counties in Tn.

George Counts family moved 1812 from Tn. to Ste. Genevieve Co, Mo. New Tennessee Settlement, when he was 7 yrs. old. George's parents were William Counts and his 2nd wife Sarah Freeman. In 1836 George & Melissa moved to Clinton, Van Buren Co, Ar. where George held various public offices. Couinty Clerk 1838-1840 again 1846-1850 yet again 1852-1854. In 1848 George traveled by covered wagon with a company of men to prospect gols in Ca. He returned to his family in Ar. in 1852. In 1854, with 4 of their 11 born children, crossed the Oregon/Ca trail to Coulterville, Ca. Later moving to Mariposa, Ca.George Counts joined the Clarksvilleand California Mining Association's Wagon Train and became a "49er" we know this because he left behind a twenty page account of the journey west. A copy wasgiven to the Mariposa County Historical Musem by Samuel Counts Cornell a descendent of Samuel Counts, George's Son. the following journal was sent to me by, C.C. Counts
The following is a Journal of the travel of George Counts to California in 1849
Wagon left Clinton, Ar. Mar 23rd, S.P. Griggs the 25th, GeorgeCounts on the 28, 1849
Mar 28 1849 Wagon left home at Clinton, Ar. I overtookmy wagon on April 5, 5 mi. above Ozark, on the South Side of the river-camped on the 5th of April near the old barracks at Fort Smith. On the 10th, the Clarksville Company oraanized. Elected Redman Rogers Captain, S.P. Griggs 4th Lieutenant, on the 11th wagons were inspected-went 3 mi. & camped.
Apr 12, -went 6 miles, camped in a prairie, 1 mi. from the ferry, on the Posto River
Apr 13, crossed the Poteau, went a few mi. & camped
Apr 14, went 2 miles west of the Choctaw Agency, camped 25 m. from Fort Smith
Sun Apr 15, rested. J. B. Arinio preached, Bunkin preached also. Indians had a ball play near our camp.
Mon Apr 16, remained in camp, McAllister preached
Tue Apr 17, traveled 14 mi. in a prairie.
Wed Apr 18, traveled 6 mi. across the Sanboy-went 1 mile & camped. Saw2 Indians whipped.
Thur Apr 19, traveled 8 mi. over bad road camped in a prairie.
Fri Apr 20, traveled 12 mi. Got stove coal today, two wagons got pork (this area of Ok. has natural coal deposits on the surface)
Sat Apr 21, traveled8 mi. camped at the foot of a mountain 6 mi. from the Canadian River.
Sun Apr22, went on top of the mountains & camped
Mon Apr 23, crossed the South Fork of the Canadian. Went 5 mi. & camped. This is a level fertile section. We are 85 mi. from Fort Smith. (the area is current city of Hrnyette, Ok)
Tue Apr 24, traveled 18 mi. camped in a prairie 40 mi. east of Little River.
Wed Apr 25, traveled 15 mi. crossed a little creek & camped in a prairie
Thur Apr 26, traveled 11 mi. over bad road. Camped near Indian Hut.
Fri Apr 27, traveled 16 mi. crossed Littlr River. Went 11/2 mi. & camped. Crossed 7 small creeks today.
Sat Apr 28, traveled 7 mi. camped on the South Fork of the Little River (west side of present day Ok. City)
Sun Apr 29, rested & had a sermon by Parson Bates.
Mon Apr 30, traveled 16 mi. crossed a beautiful creek of limestone water, camped in a prairie with groves of timber. ( near the present day Bethany, Ok.)
Tur May 1, traveled 15 mi. partly over good land. Camped.
Wed May 2, traveled 16mi. over good prairie upland, crossed a little muddy creek & camped. (near El Reno)
Thur May 3, traveled 18 mi. camped at Cleotoes, old trading post, which stood on an elevated part of a large rich prairie. Used old gate posts as fuel.
Fri May 4, traveled 10 mi. had a "Northerner,: as cold as Nov. camped at a branch all wet & cpld.
Sat May 5, remained in camp all day to repair guns, ect.
Sun May 6, rested & had a sermon by J.B. Arinio.
Mon May 7, traveled 11 mi. over level prairie, saw some Indians with pack mules.
Tue May 8, traveled 12 mi. over prairie.
Wed May 9, traveled 14 mi, camped without wood, cooked with chips. This is rich land here.
