GENERAL KNOX
From Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland, by Sir Bernard Burke.
Vol. 1, page 1, 1127 Lineage John Knox, the Reformer. "This would now appear
to be the direct representative line of the ancient family of Knox, the founder
of that name Adamus, son of Uchtred, who married Sybella daughter of Walter,
High Steward of Scotland, ancestor of the royal house of Stuart, obtained from
the High Stewart, temp; Alexander ll. Ranfurlie, Grieft castle, Craigend, etc.
in the Barony and County of Renfrew."
The descendants of Adamus assumed the Surname of Knox, derived, according
to "Patronymic Brittanica," page 182 from lands of Knocks, or
Knox: "Knock" being Gaelic for a round-top hill. For many generations
they were seated at the Castle of Ranfurlie, the remains of which lie between
.Glasgow and Greenock.
Descent of Adamus from Uchtred, the second son of Walter, Earl of Dunbar, the
son of Cospatrick, Earl of Northumberland, and afterward Earl of Dunbar,
in Scotland, who died 1069. He was a descendant of Maldred, Prince of the
Isles, and brother of Duncan II, King of Scotland, by Algitha daughter of Ucter,
Earl of Northumberland.
LINEAGE
Adamus had a son, Johanne del Cnok, who married Isabel, daughter and co-heir
of Robert, Lord Ros o1 Werke; who had a son, Uchtred de Knocks, who had a son,
John do Knocks, who by his wife the only child of Sir Robert Maxrell, of Calderwood,
by Elizabeth the co-heiress of Sir Robert Demiss had two sons, Uchtred and William
Knocks who married Jean Sinclair of high lineage.
William Knocks, Son of John de Knocks, married Jean Sinclair and had two
sons, William Knox, junior, whose descendants are the Coleraine Knox family
and John Knox, the Reformer. Both these sons are represented through their descendents
in the Tennessee family of Knox. John Knox married twice but has no descendants
to the male line. William Knox also married and the family by the nave Knox
descends from him. Children were: George
