Her husband's mother, Ann, taught her how to be a mid-wife.

Her daughter, Ila, said she was a very good rider. "I've seen her get off the horse, grab hold of its tail or mane and follow it when the mountain was too steep".

Her mother died when she was very young and she was raised by her grandmother, Abby Rogers.
