Freserick and Rose moved from Newberry County SC to Blount
County, Alabama in the early 1820's
Henry Counts, died 1814. His second wife was Catherine Fellers, died 1817,
daughter of John Fellers. Henry Counts is believed to be a son of Johannes
Kountz. After the death of Henry Counts and his his wife,Catherine,
Frederick Counts referred in court records to Catherine Counts as his
step-mother.

Counts, Fred and Rose (Article in County History Book for Yalabusha Co., MS)

Some of the county's pioneer settlers were Fred and Rose Counts, moving into the North-east corner of the county in the 1840's. Both were born in South Carolina, and were well up in years by the time they moved westward. Frederick Counts was born in 1774, Rose in 1780.(Proven incorrect per census) Fred's parents were both German: W. Henry Counts and Catherine Fello (English spelling "Fellers") of Newberry County, South Carolina. W. Henry Counts' father was Johannes Kountz, German, who came to Newberry County in the mid-1700'sand was given a land grant from King George III of England for 350 acres on Crimm's Creek, Newberry County, in 1751.

Fred and Rose Counts had one son and three daughters. One daughter, Sarah, married Hillary Adams and they settled near Birmingham, Ala. (see "Wilks Adams and Kir") and later this family moved to near Banner, Calhoun County. As recorded by the 1860 Federal Census Julius and Emily Counts and children lived next door to Fred and Rose. Julius was probablya son. Julius' children were William, Wesley, Mary, Julius, Parata, Elizabeth,Lewis, John, Sarah Franklin, and Martha. Another possible son of Fred and Rosewas Henry Counts, who by 1870 lived near Banner. His wife was Rebecca. (Dickey) His children were William, Mary, Victoria, Emily, Elijah, Lucinda, John, and Permelia.

Fred and Rose, with the help of grandson Wilks Adams and his wife Nancy, cleared land, built log cabins, and raised cotton beginning in the last part of the 1840's. At least one black family, Aunt Sal Counts, lived on the farm with them. Later when Calhoun County was formed from parts of Yalobusha, theCounts-Adams home place was in Calhoun County, but practically on the border of the Yalobusha-Calhoun county line.

The Civil War greatly changed the fortunes of many, and the Counts family was no exception. At war's end Granny Countshad two cotton sacks full of Confederate money, now worthless. During the war "King Cotton" brought in good money. After the war, a hard life began, economically.

Grandson Wilks Adams was conscripted into Confederate service, and hiswife Nancy having died, Rose "Granny" Counts was left with the rearing of three little great-grandchildren while Wilks was away. Fred Counts had died by the war's beginning. The three little girls, Sarah Ann, Paralee Jane, and Rose EmmaAdams in later years recall their Granny Counts as very mean, not even lettingthem use a comb to comb their hair. She would tie the comb way up in the attic, but when she wasn't looking they would pile boxes and chairs on top of each other and climb up and retrieve it. On at least one occasion Yankees stopped by and helped themselves to smoked hams and meat from the smoke house.

Family tradition has it that Rose "Granny" Counts, although pretty mean, lived to a ripe old age. In the 1950's some logs from the original log cabins at the old Counts-Adams home place were crumbling, But still visible. The home place is a short way east and south of the Old Liberty area. Parents: William Henry COUNTS and Catherina "Catherine" FELLERS.

Unpublished Issue of Morristown, Tn. 1787-1936
Following Martin Stubblefield, Henry Counts became the most prominent citizen ofMorristown, especially in the ownership of estate and business. Very little isknown of the Counts family prior to their location in this section. From an old Family Bible it is learned that one, John Counts, married Elizabeth Armentrout. He died in 1777, and was the father of Nicholas Counts, whose will is recorded in the court House at Dandridge of date 2838, in which Nicholas Counts nameshis grandson Henry CCounts and Wm. Barton adminastrators. He bequethed the most of his belongings to his wife, Eve and small amounts to his son Henry and a daughter Mrs. Noe

After his marriage to Mary Stubblefield, Henry Counts and his wife lived in the Martin Stubblefield home untill he built a home on the lotadjoining, which was used as a tavern. This home was torn down to make way forthe railroad, and another home was built on the south side of the railroad tracks. This was known in later years as the Turley house, then as the Cain house.(It was burned in 1895) Henry Counts owned a large part of the land now consisting of the east end of Morristown. He tore down the old Martin Stubblefield house and used the logs in erecting a two story dwelling on the present Hight School, which he later traded to Dr. Crampton Harris for a farm west of Morristown.

Henry Counts lived to be a very old man, and in 1878 was found dead in a woodland on his farm. His wife survived him for many years. Mary Counts was a well known character, serving the community as midwife, nurse and charm doctor. Henry and wife Mary had only one child, named Betty Ann, who married Samuel Huffmaster. Samuel Huffmaster was of German descent, his father Gottlieb Huffmeister, who emigrated to America in 1776 and settled in Hawkins Co, Tn. in 1810. Hiswill is recorded in the Hawkins Co. Court House. Samuel Huffmaster built his home, a double log cabin, near a large spring south of the passanger depot. He engaged in various enterprises, also served on the first Board of Mayor and Alderman. He was a member of a stock company that built and operated a steam flour mill on the corner of Main and Mill Streets, also a machine shop and blacksmithshop. This was the first big enterprise of Morristown.

Back In The First Half of the 1800's and perhaps later, the Methodists of Morristown, lifted their voices and sang:
"O. God my heart with love inflame,
That I may in Thy holy name,
Loud in songs of praise rejoice
While I have Breath to raise my voice,
Then will I shout, then will I sing,
And Make the heavenly arches ring.
I'll sing and shout for evermore,
On thateternal happy shore."

Among The Singers were pioneers Henry Counts and his wife, Mary Stubblefield Counts. They sang from a little hymnal entirely handwritten by Jacob Snyder of Rockingham Co, Va. He began writing it in 1805 and he called it "A Collection of Hymns Generally Sung by the Methodists."
The little hymnal, its pages yellowed and a bit tattered and the ink so faded that some words are not quite readable, is owned by Mrs. Joseph W. Jones. In 1873 Mrs. Counts presented the book to her great-grandson, S.L. Hoffmiester, who was Mrs. Jones' father

According to a peice written by Howard Hill for the Morristown;s Daily Gazzett-Mail in 1964, Henry Counts owned a large part of what is now the east end of Morristown. He was a very old man when he died in 1876, three yearsafter Mrs. Counts gave the old hymnal to their great-grandson. She lived on for many years and people affectionately called her "Aunt Mary" and sometimes "Granny Counts." She often searved as nurse and midwife in her community
