J. Webb Nelson Dies Suddenly At Home Here

Well-Known McKinney Salesman Passes Away

J. W. Nelson Jr., died suddenly at 7:10 o’clock this (Friday) morning at his residence 1002 North Colege Street, after less than a thirty minute illness.

The deceased, who was 43 years, 4 months and 17 days old, had been a salesman in stores at Weston and McKinney for about eighteen or nineteen years and had an extensive acquaintance in our city and different parts of the county.

He arose about 6 o’clock as usual and had eaten a light breakfast and started for the city when he was sieged with his sudden illness. Dr. W.R. Mathers, the family physician, was hurriedly summoned, but in spite of his medical skill the patient passed away at the above stated hour.

James Webster Nelson was born November 23, 1881 in Wayne county, Kentucky, where he resided until about the age of thirteen when his parents moved to Texas, first settling at Jameson, Grayson county, and soon thereafter coming on to Collin where they settled on a farm just northwest of the town of Anna.

On August 4, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Stella Howell at the old Liberty Methodist church at Roland with the pastor Rev. C.D. Roberts officiating. He followed farming until about nineteen years ago when he became a salesman. He clerked for eight years at the Weston store of Prof. S.C. Stephens.

Seven years ago he moved to McKinney and purchased a home where he lived until the time of his death on North College Street. He had been a member of the Methodist church since young manhood holding his membership in the First Methodist church of this city.

The deceased was a man of most cordial affability and pleasing personality and readily made friends and was courteous and gentlemanly in his demeanor and bearing toward everyone.

He was a home loving man, a devoted son, brother, husband and father. His home life was of the happiest nature always taking great pride in giving his family all the conveniences and advantages of a happy home and prided in his children.

He is survived by his heart-broken wife and three children, Doyle L., Miss Leta Mae and Welby Glen. Doyle, the oldest son, is married and owns the Fairview Grocery store and filling station three miles south of McKinney, Miss Leta Mae is a member of this year’s graduating class of Boyd High School, while the younger son, Welby Glen is eleven years old.

He is also survived by his parents, J.W. Nelson Sr., and wife of Route four, Bonham and by seven brothers and three sisters as follows: J.B. Nelson, Denison, Tex.; C.L. Nelson, Randolph, Texas; Rev. Oby Nelson, pastor of one of the Baptist churches in Fort Worth; T.E. Nelson of Waco, W.L., Herschel and Eulas, all three of whom live at Bonham.

The sisters are Mrs. R.E. Barnett of Bonham, Texas; Mrs. Virginia Sims, of Eldorado, Arkansas; Mrs. Olen Frost of Vernon, Texas. One brother, Goffie Nelson, died at the age of about twenty-one or twenty-two. He is also survived by one three year old grandson, J.W. Nelson, III. Also by his grandmother, Mrs. Melissa Daffron who reached her ninety-fourth year on April 8.

Her ninety-fourth anniversary was observed by a family reunion at her home near Bonham, Sunday, April 5, at which time five generations of the family were present.

The grief-stricken family and many relatives have the most profound sympathy of our entire city in their sudden bereavement.
