Spouse: William BUTRAM. William BUTRAM and Margaret were married in 1775 in Lancaster, CO., VA. I have come to the conclusion that John Butterum who came to this country with William Reynolds in 1637 is the man we are looking for. On August 15, 1637 William Reynolds was granted 200 acres of land in the transportation of four persons; Morris Jones, Richard Pew, John Butterum and Ann Banks in Charles River County VA which became York County in 1642.

I have no further trace of this John Butterum that came with Reynolds, but a Nicholas Butterum showed up in Calvert Co. MD by Jan. 23,1671. He was prominent in Calvert Co for the next 15 years, until he died in 1686, leaving a widow an unknown number of children. I believe this Nicholas Butterum was a son of John Butterum who had come to this country with William Reynolds in 1637 because he was in the right place, at the right time, and with the right name.

There were may traces of Butterum/Buttram families in the area between 1637 and 1730. During the eighty or so years that Buttrams were in Eastern MD, they moved from Calvert Co. In the south to Cecil Co. On the Penn. Border , next to Lancaster Co. This could be important because if have been told the William Buttram who went to Pittsylvania, Co BA in 1739 came form Pennsylvania.

The name Butterum was changing to Buttram and other variations during the time these people were in MD. Nicholas Butterum was known as Nicholas Buttram in some of the later records in MD. Butterum was being used less, and Buttram more and more during the time these people were in MD. Nicholas Butterum had a son William who made a Will in 1692 in Charles Co. MD. This William Buttram died before Aug. 14, 1713. I believe this William was the father of John Buttram who was a prominent in the years between 1714 and 1727.

Now we come to John Buttram who is listed in 12 transactions in Eastern MD between 1701 and 1727. Johns name was spelled Butterum 4 times, Buttram once, Buttrum Twice and Burtram five times in the those 12 transactions. John Buttram first married Elizabeth Westbury and they had at least one child, William Buttram, born in 1706. Elizabeth died in on May 7th, 1714. In June of 1714, William Buttram , aged 8, was bound to Daniel Scott the Younger, and his wife Elizabeth , with the consent of his father , John. John Buttram then married Jane Mayer and the records indicate that they were in Cecil Co. MD by 1715. I believe that John lived in that area the remainder of his life.

In 1739 William Buttram entered for 400 acres on the Bannister River, beginning at the Great Low Grounds. In 1743 he made several entries on the Smith River, and Buttram Town Creek as its known today, was not doubt named for his settlement there. I think that William served his bondage to Daniel Scott and probably followed his father to Cecil Co. And was married there or in Pennsylvania. When new lands opened in VA, I think he went down there with his young family There is a record of William Buttram entering additional Land in Brunswick Co. south of the Bannister River , as late as 1747.

I think William Buttram had a son William Buttram I who was the son of the man that entered land on the Bannister River. William I married Margaret, and was in Towan Co. NC by 1759 when their first child was born. He might have had up to 14 children. Some of their childrens names were William, Margaret, Nicholas, John, Andrew, Cornelius, Jacob, Levi, and James. Margaret might have been from Pennsylvania. William Buttram seattled on Rich's fork of Abbotts Creek, in Rowan Co. NC and paid taxes on this land in 1784. He may have stayed their as long as he lived. Children were: Elizabeth BOUTTERAM, William BUTRAM, Margaret BUTTRAM, Nicholas L. BUTTRAM, John BERTRAM, Andrew BERTRAM, James BUTTRAM, Cornelius BERTRAM, Jacob BUTTRAM, Levi BUTTRAM, Seedy BUTTRAM.
