Richard was the son of Richard I Poston and Ann Campbell. Richard was the son of a prominent Virginia plantation owner. When his mother died, his father remarried and he did not get along with his step-mother. One Sunday, while his father and step-mother were at church, he took a rifle, $10
and a horse and left home. He followed the Indian trail into Kentucky and later went south to Tennessee where he stayed in the home of Col. Stephen Calvin Copeland. He later married Amelia Elizabeth Copeland, the daughter of Col. Copeland.
