Mary Ann CRAWFORD was born on 19 April 1856 in Clinton County, Indiana, USA. Parents: Oliver Perry CRAWFORD and Mary Ann GIBSON.

Mary Eliazbeth (Polly) CRAWFORD was born on 11 November 1793 in Pendleton Co., SC. She died on 27 December 1852 in Twp, Wapello Co, IA. Parents: James CRAWFORD and Elizabeth ENGLAND.

Spouse: George Ambrose BROCK. Mary Eliazbeth (Polly) CRAWFORD and George Ambrose BROCK were married in 1809. History
George Ambrose Brock, was the #1 child of James Brock
and Mildred Crain, he was born on 9 March 1789, in
Tennessee. Mary Elizabeth Crawford, was the #13 child of
James Crawford and Betsy Engald she was born on 11 November
1793 in what is now Byrdstown, Pickett County, Tennessee.
The date of George and Mary's marriage is about 1808.
George Ambrose's trade was a cooper (Genealogy by Saron K.
Minten). He served as justice of the peace in Fentress
County from 1838 until his death. As justice of the peace
for the County he performed many marriages. I have read
some family histories in, "History of Fentress County
Tennessee", dated 1987, Volume I, 707 pages, where George
Ambrose had performed marriages for folks in Fentress
County. Public records like this were destroyed during the
Civil War.
The marriage of George Ambrose and Mary Crawford Brock
had an issued of 13 children, their names are: #1 James
Porter, #2 Ambrose, #3 Casander, #4 Permelia Caroline, #5
Vineyard Crawford, #6 Mildred Crane, #7 Nettie Caroline, #8
Elizabeth, #9 Lucinda, #10 George Allen, #ll Russell
Wilburn, #12 Celestine, and #13 Pleasant Taylor Brock. They
were raised on a farm located near the Tennessee-Kentucky
state line and was therefore considered by some as being in
Clinton County, Kentucky, while actually it was in Fentress
County, Tennessee.
On 12 April 1841 during a crossing of swollen Spring
Creek on a horse, George Ambrose was drowned with his
daughter Elizabeth. The following is quoted from Reuben J.
Bates, "Aunt Elizabeth Brock's horse slipped or fell into
Spring Creek and her Dad got excited and jumped in to save
her. Most of the family said, he actually died of a heart
attack". He died intestate, at age 52 years 1 month and 3
days.
The Circuit Court of Fentress County divided his 400
acres of land in one eleventh shares between each of the
children, not all of the children were of age and were
appointed guardians. Reference pages 449 to 456 of the
Fentress County Minutes Book, Vol 1, 1842-1844; copied
under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), 22 May 1937.
I could not find the actual book in the Fentress County
Courthouse. This record shows the Circuit Court land survey
of the 400 acres to each child.
The Reuben Bates Genealogy on the Zachary's show that
Casander Brock was born near Hayles Mill (sometime spelled
Hale's Mill). I believe that the George Ambrose and Mary
Brock homestead was located in this area and all their
children were most likely born on this farm near Hale's
Mill. Page 158 in book "Gone But Not Quite Forgotten", a
book of Pickett County Cemeteries by Richard W. Pierce has
comments about a Hale's Mill Cemetery. In 1992 it appeared
that there were approximately 12 to 15 graves either with
fieldstone's as markers or unmarked. Cecil Flowers comments
were that this was a colored cemetery and called Old
Huddleston cemetery. In the 1840's J. D. Hale, a physician
bought land in this area and the cemetery became part of the
Old Hale place. These words aroused my curiosity, "this
cemetery may have been started before the Hales purchased
the land". This leads me to some speculation on where our
Brocks are buried, yet I feel we shall never know the burial
location of the following: (1) Ambrose Brock (son of George
and Mary), died 25 June 1814; (2) James Brock, died
September 1831; (3) Mildred Crane Brock, died before 1837;
(4) George Ambrose, died 12 April 1841; (5) his daughter
Elizabeth Brock, died 12 April 1841; and Mildred Crane Brock
Davidson, died about 1845. The Brocks also owned slaves and
this could add some reason to the puzzle, I just wanted to
express my thoughts.
After 1842 the Brock boys began to move westward, the
girls of the family that were married remained. On the 6th
of September 1849 Mary Crawford Brock left Tennessee with
her two sons Vineyard and Russell for Wapello County, Iowa
where her oldest son James Porter Brock was farming. James
Porter and Permelia Hatcher Brock sold Mary, his mother a
parcel of land on 14 April 1850 for $170.00. George Allen,
my Great Grandfather was the last to leave, he left for
Missouri in about 1864 which would of been during the Civil
War.
Information obtained from a diary found in Wasco,
Oregon in the home of Alexander M. and Mary Elizabeth Brock
Hicks, daughter of Russell Wilbur Brock, gives dates and
information about the Brock family.
In the 1850 Census Mary Elizabeth Crawford Brock was
head of the household, she indicated that she was born in
South Carolina. The following children were in the
household: (1) Clestine, (2) Pleasant, (3) William, (4)
Mary, (5) Steward, and (6) Alvin, all was born in Tennessee.
Russell Wilburn Brock son of George and Mary was working for
James P. as a farm hand. The six (6) children under the
care of Mary Crawford were not all her children, Mary,
Steward, and Alvin were her Grand children, belonging to her
son Vineyard. I do not know anything about William Brock or
his parents.
Information from the diary indicates the Vineyard was
married and had 5 children. When he left for Oregon three
were with his mother in Iowa and the two youngest were with
his divorced wife in Tennessee. His wife returned to her
father's plantation in Tennessee. It is unknown how he got
the three children to Oregon, it is believed that he sent
for the three eldest children after he arrived in Oregon.
Giving affidavits for this claim were Russell W. Brock,
Lewis McCallister, Miller Morgan and Thomas Ward.
Mary must of had a reason possible her health, on the
25th of November 1851, she sold her parcel of land to
Clestine and Pleasant, her youngest two children, for the
same price she had paid James Porter and his wife. She was
about 58 years old when she sold the property, and she died
on 27 December 1852. She is buried in the Ralston Cemetery,
Adams Township in Wapello County, Iowa close to where James
Porter and Mary Brock lived. Her head stone is in rather
good condition and reads "Affectionate Mary. wife of G.A.
Brock. Died December 27, 1852 AE.59 yrs 1 mo 15 ds.,
however, it has been broken off at ground level but the
lower part is still visible. James Porter and Permelia also
have two daughters, Amanda and Merit H. Brock, buried close
to their Grandmother. A note of interest, Shelby Porter
Brock has a daughter that married into the Ralston family.
There may be other relatives in this cemetery.
Inconstancy or variances:
1. Mary Elizabeth Crawford place of Birth. (1) IGI File,
Nettie Caroline Brock/Jarriott Anderson Huddleson shows her
mother born Pickett Co., Tennessee. (2) 1850 Census of
Ottumwa Iowa, shows place of birth as South Carolina.
2. Our cousin Charline Martin of the Hildreth line, (a
retired school teacher of Byrdstown) took Pat and I around
and about the country side. Also over and about the Spring
Creek area but nothing on the place of the drowning event.
The Tennessee line is within 6 miles from Albany Kentucky,
which seems to be the area of Brock property and the Spring
Creek runs very close by. Also, the Clear Fork Baptist
Church was very near to Albany. However, George Ambrose was
not a member.
3. The diary appears to have been written by Russell Wilbur
Brock on a day by day event during the trip over the Oregon
trail from Iowa to Oregon, and contains some family items of
interest The diary shows they departed Iowa for California
on the 30th day of April 1850, but went to Oregon. See
Family Group Records of Russell W. Brock for diary
information.
I welcome any additional information, comments or
criticism on this history of George Ambrose Brock and his
wife Mary lizabeth Crawford.

return

Centerpoint Ark., March 9th, 1861

Very dear brother & Sister and connexion all:

We received your letter of the 8th of February last, this
evening and truly glad to hear from you and I rejoiced to hear
that you were able to assist your own children and it is your
duty: or any parents duty to assist their own children, in
preference to any other person. And especially at such a time
as this. My dear brother, don't give yourself any uneasyness
about our necessity for the fact that one of my old friends
from Tennessee sent me twenty Dollars on hearing of the
hardness of times with us. I also received a letter from one of
the Deacons of the Church we left informing me that if I
would receive: the brethern would send a contribution for our
benefit. And again we have been blessed with friends here:
who have let us have meat for splitting of Rails and none of us
minds or dreads work.

You may think it strange, but I would much rather split Rails
for my meat than to have money made by contribution. So I
have received nary Dollar, in that way. Our Wheat looks fine.
Our season has been very favorable to stock. We milk three
cows and I think with good management with our horses, that
they will be able to attend our crops. We have said all this to
let you know that our prospects are some brighter.

Ark. has by a small majority voted the Union. We have no
foreign news to any certainty. We received a letter from son
Pitser in Tenn. informing us of very hard times there. He is
elected county surveyor of Hardeman Cty Tenn.
Consequently he will not move out here this year. Son Rufus
writes from St. Francis, Ark. says he raised 47.5 bushels of
corn to the acre and 1400 lb of seed cotten per acre. He
seems to be well pleased.

We have abundant reason to praise and adore the name of
God, for we have many favors and blessings which we have
been favored with all of former days: even now. The blessed
Gospel is yet allowed us, as a lamp to our feet and should the
justice of God seem severe with the light of life in our hands
we may go our own way rejoicing, looking to Christ as the
Beacon of our Salvation. These light afflictions are but for a
time: while eternity awaits us with perfect bliss. Then & there
we will meet our beloved brothers & sisters: our Fathers &
Brothers, and meet to part no more. (as all will be Brothers &
sisters) The righteous will come marhcing home. How it
cheers our prospects. We are all well but Russel's Widow.
She has chills occasionally, there has been one death in our
neighborhood this winter of Tyfoid and some cases are now
on hand. May the good lord be with you all to bless and keep
you in the way. farewell R.J. Crawford

While we look at the Political strife and have men who are
willing to sacrifice our country cause for themselves, none
such are worthy of the Presidency. We have much reason to
fear the judgements of God will rest in our land. I am fearful
the worst is not yet come. Oppression, Extortion are
common, and the spirit of grace is stifled with the times of
party strife. Religion should be the chief concern of mortals
here below. But it is the last thing: and hardly concerns at all. I
must acknowledge some exception. As I am called on to
organize a Church in our county on next Saturday. My labors
will be much abridged by reason of the scarcity of feed for
horses, but I can walk mightely. We have tried to do our duty
in this country, and we are very desireous to conclude the
remainder of our days in the cause of Christ. Pray for us that
we may do rite.
