Mary (Marian) Mayfield¹⁴⁰⁹ was born in 1804 in Overton County, Tennessee.¹⁴⁰⁹ She died in 1860 at the age of 56 in Livingston, Tennessee.¹⁴⁰⁹ Mary Mayfield was believed to be the first white woman to be born in Overton Co TN. Mary killed Ruth Dougherty, the girl friend of Josiah. But remained married to Josiah. Mary was convicted of 2nd degree murder, but pleaded self defense. She appealed and went all the way to the state supreme court and was granted a new trial. On the second trial she was acquitted. I have a copy of the trial which I got at the Gibson co. Court-house. She and Josiah were listed on the 1850 overtone co. Census. Mary is buried in the tarheel cem. (Now known by another name) near Livingston Tenn. Mary's head stone has no inscription on it: it's blank. This is in keeping of the day when they did not identify the headstones of people who had killed another for fear that the head stone would be desecrated. Bat 1822 when Mary (Marian) was 18, she married Josiah (Little Joe) Copeland, son of Joe Copeland. Born on 10 Aug 1799. Josiah (little Joe) died on 9 may 1878; he was 78. Buried in Tarhill Mt., (tower hill), Livingston Tenn. Remarks: Josiah built the present day court house in Livingston Tenn. Research: called little Joe because his father weighed 400 lbs. Parents: Stephen Mayfield and Bridgett Gilmore.
