After 1784

Confusion about the lawful authority to grant land in western
NC and bad land speculation deals left some families without
homes at the close of the Revolution. At the same time the
State of Georgia was initiating plans to reward Revolution
participants and to bring into the frontier state new immigrants
from other states.

The Georgia Legislature authorized the award of land grants
to non GA residents and accepted applications during
1783-5. A few of these NC families applied for the land
grants and were awarded property in a tract of land east of
the Tugaloo River where jurisdiction was disputed between
GA and SC. The area is presently known as Oconee Co,
SC. Nevertheless, these families settled in this region and
appear together in numerous deed, tax and census records in
both North and South Carolina. Among this group from
Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin County, NC was:

John Allison
John Ashmore
William Clarke
Col. Benjamin Cleveland
William Denham
Humphrey Gibson Sr & Jr
Thomas Gragg
David Humphries
Thomas Thrasher
and James Crawford

The earliest record of James discovered to date is an affidavit
signed by James on April 26, 1784 in Augusta, supporting his
petition to the Georgia Land Board. He states that he has a
wife, four children, and six "negroes," and that he is a citizen
of Virginia. Based on this affidavit the Augusta Land Council
stated in the Petition to the Georgia Land Board that he is
qualified for 750 acres in Franklin Co, GA.

James received a land grant from the State of Georgia of 235
acres east of the Tugaloo in Franklin Co, GA on May 17,
1784. Administration of the land grant was transferred from
Washington Co, GA to Franklin Co, GA in September 1784
after the Franklin County Land Office was opened. Pursuant
to the Treaty of Beaufort in 1787, Georgia released to South
Carolina claim to lands east of the Tugaloo River. James
appears in the 1790 Pendleton, SC census.

1790 Pendleton, SC Census [311]
James Crawford: 4-5-6

4 males under 16: Colby, Jesse, Vineyard, and Joseph.
5 males over 15: Moses, John, James, and 2 of James'
or Elizabeth's brothers. These 2 adult males may be the
unidentified adult males >44 years old in the 1820
Orange Co, IN census with Joseph.
6 females: Elizabeth, Betsy, Casander, Rachel, Mary
(John's wife [122]), and the oldest child of John and
Mary.

On 4 Jan 1796, during a series of hearings held by the State
of South Carolina to clear up all land claims in the Pendleton
District, the SC land court re-granted James the 235 acres on
which he was living. [110] This property appears to be river
view property near the town of Madison. James' land was
located very near Ben Cleveland's land on which Cleveland is
buried. Pendleton District, SC tax index references records
for Moses and James Crawford in 1779. This is probably an
error intended to reference 1799 tax records for James and
his son Moses (possibly the oldest son).

1800 Pendleton, SC Census [310]
James Crawford: 22101-21001-03
John Crawford: 00010-11100-00

2 males under 10: Samuel and Russell J.
2 males 10-15: Colby and Jesse.
1 male 16-25: Vineyard.
1 male over 44: James.
2 females under 10: Rachel and Mary.
1 female 10-15: Casander.
1 female over 44 years: Elizabeth.
Moses has his own household in GA. Joseph and his 2
uncles have gone to Knox Co, TN.
John (~30) is listed with his wife, Mary (25), and 2
girls; 1 (0-9) and 1 (10-15) probably 10 years. From
records of James' son, John in Lawrence Co, AR, this
John appears to be the brother of James and not
James' son.Children were: John CRAWFORD, Sallie CRAWFORD, Moses CRAWFORD, Elizabeth CRAWFORD, Joseph CRAWFORD, Vineyard CRAWFORD, Jesse H. CRAWFORD, Colby CRAWFORD, Casander CRAWFORD, Rachel CRAWFORD, Mary Eliazbeth (Polly) CRAWFORD, Samuel CRAWFORD, Russell J CRAWFORD.
