There is no record of him having s erved the Confe derate Army. It is not known how he was ab le to avoid mili tary service. There is some evidence tha t he was not wholl y in sympathy with the Confederate Cause . Harmon was a Far mer, Trader, Lay Preacher, and a Builde r. He was very acti ve in his religion. He was buried bes ide his first wife, S arah Lucinda, at Pleasant Hill. Mos t of the Butram's in St . Clair Co., Alabama are descende d from Harmon. After his mother's death, Harmon went back to Tennessee a n d brought his father (John Elijah Buttram) to Alabama t o li ve with him. His father remained with Harmon until hi s dea th in 1871. It was locate d a t Richmond, Virginia, but the Confederates moved the pr ison ers from Belle Isle to other places as the war drew ne ar Ri chmond. John was born 1 June 1803 in Rowan County, Nort h Caro lina, went to Virginia, then Kentucky, then to Bleds oe Coun ty, Tennessee, where he married Mrs. Phebe Miser Br own in 1 821. John was licensed to exhort on 5 October 1830, and in 18 3 1 he moved to Rhea (now Meigs) County, Tennessee. He wa s l icensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church o n 25 J uly 1836. He died at the age of 37 from a brain tum or whic h grew through his skull. The was a mass of brai n tissue " Protruding considerably from the right lateral v entricle o f the brain". He obituary is graphic in the des cription o f his symptoms, and relays his continuing care a nd ministr y to all those around him, up until a short tim e before hi s death. John had been a large land owner, selling 480 acres in Mei g s County in 1836 and 1837, and after the death of Phebe , th e Meigs County court found that the executor of her es tat e had fraudulently traded it and the persons who owed m one y to the estate had moved away or were insolvent.
