E. Lessly, who have been suffering from diphtheria for the past week, are much better, we are glad to state. It was feared Tuesday night of last week that Miss Addie could not live through the night, and but for the fact that Dr. C. F. Burkhalter remained at her bedside all night Thursday, 5 May 1927, Vol 40, No 52, Pg. 1 Col. 3--SCHOOL NOTES--The high Alice Gray LESSLY164 was born on 25 December 1856 in Polk Co., MO.305,901 She died on 18 January 1921 in Mill Creek, OK. She was buried in Durant, OK. In the printed account of the 1860 census for Polk County, MO, Alice is listed as a child in her father's household. Her age is given as 4 and her place of birth as Missouri. In the 1870 census for Randolph Co., MO, Alice appears as a child in her father's household. Her age is listed as 13 and her place of birth as Missouri. Also she is listed as having attended school within the last year. In the 1880 census for Randolph Co., MO, Alice appears as a member of her husband's household. Her age is listed as 23, her occupation as "keeping house", and her place of birth as Missouri. Both of her parents are listed as having been born in Kentucky. It had been suggested in family notes that Alice and her husband accompanied the Lessly migration to Texas (occuring about 1874-1876) but their presence in the 1880 Randolph Co., MO census dispells that notion. Family notes also suggest that at some time Alice and her husband had a farm near James Elkins Lessly in Grayson Co., TX. They may eventually have moved on with the Oklahoma land rush. Alice appears in the 1920 census for Oklahoma, Johnston County, Gibbs Twp. as a member of her husband's household. Her age is listed as 64 and her place of birth is listed as Missouri. Her father's birthplace is listed as Kentucky and her mother's birthplace is listed as South Dakota (not true). The information from both census records confirms family information on Alice's birthdate and birthplace. Parents: James Elkins LESSLY and Emily HARRIS. Spouse: George Thomas KIMBROUGH. She is listed as having attended school within the last year. On the Broderbund Archive CD#5 a Almyra Lessley is listed as marrying H.M. Wilkerson on 13 February 1855 in Polk County. An Elvira Wilkerson is listed in the 1860 Missouri census for Polk County in the household of Mary Lessley (her mother)). Her age is given as 25 and her place of birth as Kentucky. I believe this "Elvira" and the Almira from 1850 to be the same person especially since the ages listed in both census match up. The birthplaces listed in the both census do NOT correspond but the first census was more than likely incorrect. An Almira Wilkerson is listed as having married one H.C. Duvault on Dec 18, 1860 in Polk County. This well could be Almira Lessley Wilkerson. It would also explain her presence in her mother's household if her husband had died. Parents: John LESSLY and Polly ZIMMERMAN. Spouse: H. M. WILKERSON. Almira LESSLY and H. M. WILKERSON were married on 13 February 1855 in Polk County, MO.938 Children were: Mary WILKERSON. After her father's death she was married to Tom Williams of Higbee. They bought a farm about five miles north of Higbee and lived there until Tom's death. Annie then sold the farm and bought a house in Higbee and lived there until she had a stroke. Her last two years were spent in a nursing home in Moberly. A marriage license issued by the Recorder of Deeds for Randolph County, MO says that Annie E. Lessly and T. J. Williams were married on 28 July, 1924 at Moberly, MO. The license is signed by the Christian Minister of Moberly, MO and witnessed by Maude Williams and Claude Lessly. This Claude Lessly should be Annie's nephew Claude Kimborough Lessly.
