Notes from Chris Ann Lessly

Carole,
I asked Mom about Lucy Bennett Lessly, and my hunch was right. At a young age, Lucy was put in the mental hospital in Marshall, Missouri and lived there for the rest of her life. I don't know what her illness was....it makes you wonder, because in those days it seems they would admit people who could have had a physical condition like deafness, etc. Anyway, no other details on her. Lucy Emily LESSLY164 was born on 24 August 1884 in near Higbee, Randolph Co., MO.605,943 She died on 26 August 1912 in Higbee, Randolph Co., MO. She was buried on 28 August 1912 in Old Higbee Cemetery, Higbee, Missouri. the following is taken from the notes of Stiles Lessly circa March 1, 1970

Lucy E. Lessly was born Aug 24, 1884. She died on Aug 26, 1912, only 28 years old. She had been an invalid for some years. She was a remarkable person, about as nearly angelic as anyone I have ever known. Most of the Lesslys who died around Higbee are buried in the Higbee Cemetary, about a mile north of town.

In the 1900 census for Randolph County, MO, Lucy appears as a member of her father's household. Her date of birth is listed as August 1884, her age as 15, and her place of birth as Missouri. The birthplace of both parents is also listed as Missour. According to the census, Lucy can both read and write and has attended school for 7 months is the last year.

In the 1910 census for Randolph County, MO, Lucy appears as a member of her father's household. Her age is listed as 25 and her place of birth as Missouri. Both parents are listed as having been born in Missouri. She is listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for her.

**************************************************************************
Friday, 30 Aug 1912--MISS LUCY LESSLY DEAD--Again has the Grim Reaper visited a Higbee home and claimed as his own one of Higbee's sweetest and best young ladies--Miss Lucy E. Lessly, who died at the home of her father, G. W. Lessly, Monday, August 26, 1912, at about 8 p.m. She was born in Higbee on August 24, 1884, and was therefore 28 years and two days of age. Fifteen years ago she united with the Christian church under the ministry of Eld. Strawn, and had since lived a consistent Christian life, and when able was a
constant attendant at all the church services. Her health failed her about four years ago, and she was taken to Colorado, but to no purpose, as she seemed to grow worse. After her return home, a change for the better took place and her family and friends looked forward to her permanent recovery. But it was not to be. Her disease, gastrointestinal tuberculosis, refused to yield to any and all treatment, and death came to her as a happy release from her sufferings, which were intense, especially in the last few months. Funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday by Eld. A. N. Lindsey, of Clinton, her former pastor, and the immense assemblage of sorrowing
friends spoke most eloquently of the esteem in which she was held. She is survived by her father, three brothers--James, George and Oren, and one sister, Miss Annie, who have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. Interment was made in the city cemetery.

Friday, 13 Sep 1912--IN MEMORY OF LUCY EMILY LESSLY--August 24, 1884, a blossom budded in the home of George and Gussie Lessly, and they called this little blossom Lucy Emily. A bright winsome little daughter that brought joy and gladness to the parents' hearts, especially the mother, as 'twas her first born, and so many fond hopes and bright prospects loomed before her for this precious gift from God. Having been tenderly reared in the Christian home, she early learned to love her Savior, and the very first lessons were words of the Master, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for as such is the kingdom of Heaven." She confessed her Savior at the early age of thirteen years, and from that time until the final triumph, His love had been her comfort and strength through
all the days of joy or pain. In all her relations in life she was tried and true. As a daughter and sister she was beyond compare. Always the sweet, gentle trusting girl that had grown from her mother's arms into the high holy sphere of womanhood. It was a benediction to see or meet her. Whether talking or silent, her influence was such as to make all know that she lived in spirit with her Master. We cannot estimate the value of a life so unselfish and generous as was hers. Its influence, like the sun, drove away darkness and impurity. She
was grateful for the smallest favor shown to her or her loved ones, and never forgot to express her appreciation. She had been raised as a tender plant, but in the battle of life which she fought so long and patiently, she was strong and brave, and in the last days she would say to those around her, "I am trying so hard to be patient." What can we say of her beautiful faith and hope during the long dark hours?
Her calm patience, strong faith and abiding love seemed almost divine. With fine courage she welcomed every trial directed towards her recovery and expressed trust, modesty, and nobility of spirit in her simple unaffectedness. She was as she appeared to be, kindly and
genuinely interested in those about her, giving out cheer, sympathy, courage and heartfelt interest in all of God's work, and her love for all.
On God's own day he saw fit to call from its earthly abiding place this pure, sweet spirit, and as the evening shadows began to gather on Monday, August 26, 1912, at the age of twenty-eight years and two days, her frail body gave up the spirit to join the mother and other loved ones gone before. And 'twas a relief to the dear watchers to see the look of peace settle over the loved features which had been so long drawn and tired from suffering, and know that rest, peace and joy was hers. She had requested that Rev. A. N. Lindsay should speak the comforting words at her funeral, and many months before had selected the scripture to be read and the songs she loved. She was a loyal
life and local member of the Christian Women's Board of Missions, and a supporter and member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The many friends and acquaintances who met at the home on the afternoon of her funeral told better than words how much they loved and admired the pure sweet soul of dear Lucy. And to the loved sister, who for over twenty years has taken the place of mother as well, these friends transfer their love, admiration and respect, and extend sympathy to her and the devoted father who, with the three brothers, can say,
This loved one has gone before,
Has passed the pearly gates,
And there is fairest paradise
She for her loved ones waits.

Notes from Richard Ryan
Made Roserock pictures for many years, digging the rocks she used up out of the ground on her farm. She was the catalyst in introducing a bill making the Roserock the state rock of Oklahoma. Drove a 1945, WWII Jeep
to check on her cattle after her husband died.

Listed as Mary Joe, not Mary Jo, in the papers given to me by H.T. Avey.
These papers were property of Tom Avey's wife, Winnie Mae Lessly Avey.

Married John Henry Kuhlman at high noon. See husband's notes.

Henry and Mary Jo later purchased the adjoining farm, making one-half section in the home place. In 1929, Mary Jo was honored by being selected as a Master Farm Homemaker. She was again honored in 1930 when her picture appeared in the "Who's Who in Oklahoma." August 28, 1945, Henry was given a Certificate of Award by the Oklahoma Banker's Association naming him "A Friend of the Land" for his practices of Soil Conservation in the Cleveland County District. In 1957, Mary Jo and Henry were awarded the title of "Golden Anniversary Farm Family" in Cleveland County. This same year they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mary Jo continued to live on the farm they purchased on their wedding day after her husband's death. She not only managed the farm, but was a "rockhound" and aquired "museum of specimens." She had a large exhibit of rock creatures and jewelry which she made from rocks she had gathered and tumble polished.

Her main interest, however was in making Rose Rock pictures from her beloved rock, the Barite Rose. She was given a citation from the Oklahoma House of Representatives for being instrumental in getting this Barite Rose made the Oklahoma rock.

Lessly, who have been suffering from diphtheria for the past week, are much better, we are glad to state. It was feared Tuesday night of last week that Miss Addie could not live through the night, and but for the fact that Dr. C. F. Burkhalter remained at her bedside all night
and fought for her life by keeping her throat clear, she likely would have passed away. A trained nurse was secured the next day, and each has received every care and attention. An air-tight quarantine was established as soon as the nature of the malady was determined, and there is no fear of the disease spreading. Where they contracted the disease is a mystery. So far as is known there are no other cases in this section.

Notes from Richard Ryan
1st baby was born on the farm with the cord around his neck, with the baby dying shortly thereafter.

Roger and Edna farmed the land which cornered with the Lessly home place. His love of fishing prompted him to build several farm lakes which were always well stocked with fish. Upon retirement, Roger began the hobby of oil painting. He was well known as a painter and his pictures hung in many homes and businesses throughout Oklahoma and many other states. They had one son. Friday, 11 Apr 1919, Vol 32. No 51--PAUL LESSLY--"He came to raise our hearts to Heaven, He is gone to call us there."
Paul Lessly, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Lessly, was born July 7, 1915. Died April 3, 1919. It will be remembered little Paul was one of a pair of twin babies, his sister, Pauline, having died when about a year old. The love and attention the parents gave both babies was all give to Paul when Pauline was called home, and Thursday night when Paul was taken the parting was doubly hard. The little fellow was in his usual good health until Thursday night, when he was suddenly seized with convulsions and passed away before morning. He is survived by father and mother, four sisters and two brothers. Interment in the city cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family. Parents: George Edwin LESSLY and Willa Mae DAGGS.

Pauline Wilson LESSLY164 was born on 7 July 1915 in Missouri.606 She died on 17 August 1916 in Missouri.606 She was buried in Old Higbee Cemetery, Higbee, Missouri.606 Friday, 9 July 1915--Twins, a girl and a boy, were born on the 7th, to G. E. Lessly and wife.

Friday, 25 Aug 1916--PAULINE LESSLY--"She came to raise our hearts to heaven; She goes to call us there." Just a little more than a year ago the Lord gave into the keeping of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Lessly twin babies, a beautiful little boy and girl, who were promptly named Paul and Pauline, respectively, and all the friends and relatives of this estimable family rejoiced with them in their good fortune. However, the Lord could not see fit to let them keep both babies, so last Thursday, Aug. 17, 1916, He called little Pauline home to be with Him in heaven. This time the friends and relatives met and mourned with the sorrowing family. but as they gazed at the little waxen figure so peaceful in death they could almost know God's reason for calling her home--the angels were her fit associates. In heaven she will be waiting to welcome her loved ones home. That will be her mission, and it is hoped the bereaved ones may be guided by her pure innocence. May they find comfort in God's word, which teaches that if His people will but trust in Him all will be well and some day they shall all be reunited in heaven.
