BIOGRAPHY: A. L. Chapman was bkorn in Cumberland Co., KY. He emigrated to MO as a young man, and came overland to CA with an ox-team in 1850. He returned to MO in 1851, and returned to CA with his family in 1852. He left MO in April, arriving in Stockton, CA in October. His family consisted of five children; four daughters, one son; one step-son and one negro man Aaron. John Asa died the winter of 1852; the only son.

After living several years in Stockton, he moved with his family to Volcano, a mining town in Amador Co., where he engaged in some mining. He also had a butcher shop. In Jan, 1858, he moved to Solano Co., and bought a farm on the main highway between Suisun and Vacaville, where he engaged in grain farming and later in fruit raising. In 1885 he moved to Santa Clara Co.; bought a small fruit ranch, and later moved to the town of Santa Clara, where he lived until his death, Dec 10, 1901.

My father's name was Aidline, but heslways signed it A. L. Chapman.

Of my father's immediate family, my sister Susan and myself are the only members left. I was a child of 7 years when we crossed the Plains behind as ox-team in 1852. I remember incidents, and Indian scares but we were not molested. My father was Captain of his train. After our lunch at noon, my father had a beautiful saddle horse that he would mount and ride ahead to select a camp for the night. There were three important items; water, wood and grass for the stock, for they hadto live off the country.

The account is all from memory, except my father's family of brothers anf sisters. A cousin, Sue E. Dodson gave my their names. They were all in Kentucky. Martha Chapman Proctor (daughter) date Dec. 29, 1934. DAR
