Letter from Russell to Jesse [459c] return Centerpoint Ark., March 9th, 1861 Very dear brother & Sister and connexion all: We received your letter of the 8th of February last, this evening and truly glad to hear from you and I rejoiced to hear that you were able to assist your own children and it is your duty: or any parents duty to assist their own children, in preference to any other person. And especially at such a time as this. My dear brother, don't give yourself any uneasyness about our necessity for the fact that one of my old friends from Tennessee sent me twenty Dollars on hearing of the hardness of times with us. I also received a letter from one of the Deacons of the Church we left informing me that if I would receive: the brethern would send a contribution for our benefit. And again we have been blessed with friends here: who have let us have meat for splitting of Rails and none of us minds or dreads work. You may think it strange, but I would much rather split Rails for my meat than to have money made by contribution. So I have received nary Dollar, in that way. Our Wheat looks fine. Our season has been very favorable to stock. We milk three cows and I think with good management with our horses, that they will be able to attend our crops. We have said all this to let you know that our prospects are some brighter. Ark. has by a small majority voted the Union. We have no foreign news to any certainty. We received a letter from son Pitser in Tenn. informing us of very hard times there. He is elected county surveyor of Hardeman Cty Tenn. Consequently he will not move out here this year. Son Rufus writes from St. Francis, Ark. says he raised 47.5 bushels of corn to the acre and 1400 lb of seed cotten per acre. He seems to be well pleased. We have abundant reason to praise and adore the name of God, for we have many favors and blessings which we have been favored with all of former days: even now. The blessed Gospel is yet allowed us, as a lamp to our feet and should the justice of God seem severe with the light of life in our hands we may go our own way rejoicing, looking to Christ as the Beacon of our Salvation. These light afflictions are but for a time: while eternity awaits us with perfect bliss. Then & there we will meet our beloved brothers & sisters: our Fathers & Brothers, and meet to part no more. (as all will be Brothers & sisters) The righteous will come marhcing home. How it cheers our prospects. We are all well but Russel's Widow. She has chills occasionally, there has been one death in our neighborhood this winter of Tyfoid and some cases are now on hand. May the good lord be with you all to bless and keep you in the way. farewell R.J. Crawford While we look at the Political strife and have men who are willing to sacrifice our country cause for themselves, none such are worthy of the Presidency. We have much reason to fear the judgements of God will rest in our land. I am fearful the worst is not yet come. Oppression, Extortion are common, and the spirit of grace is stifled with the times of party strife. Religion should be the chief concern of mortals here below. But it is the last thing: and hardly concerns at all. I must acknowledge some exception. As I am called on to organize a Church in our county on next Saturday. My labors will be much abridged by reason of the scarcity of feed for horses, but I can walk mightely. We have tried to do our duty in this country, and we are very desireous to conclude the remainder of our days in the cause of Christ. Pray for us that we may do rite. R.J.
