Stephen WEST was born on Aug 1, 1809 in Overton County, Tennessee. He died on Oct 3, 1905 in Overton County, Tennessee. His obituary was written on Oct 18, 1905.¹⁹⁴⁰ WEST, STEPHEN: Stephen West, one of the oldest men in the upper country,
is dead at Starpoint. He had been confined to his room five or six
months on account of a fall hurting his hip, from which he could not
walk, but his general health was very good up to a short time before his
death, which occurred Oct. 2, 1905, his age being 96 years, two months
and one day. All his children execpt (sic) his youngest daughter, Mrs.
Jan Harrison of Kemp, I. T., many of his grandchildren and great-
grandchildren were with him in his last days. . . . Mr. West was an
uncle of Esq. C. J. Davis. [Date 10/18/1905, Vol. III, No. 37, Page 1] He was buried in West Cemetery moved to Hatcher Hall Cemetery. He served in the military Civil War in 13th Cavalry Dibbrill's 8th Regement Company A. Have letters he wrote during the War Between the States.

13th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Gore's)

13th Cavalry Regiment, usually called Dibrell's 8th Cavalry, was organized in September, 1862, as a partisan ranger command. Its twelve companies were from Overton, Putnam, White, and Jackson counties. The regiment was assigned to Forrest's, Humes', Biffle's, and Dibrell's Brigade. It fought at Parker's Cross Roads, skirmished in Alabama and Georgia, then was engaged at Chickamauga. Later the unit was involved in the Atlanta Campaign, saw action at Saltville in Virginia, took part in the defense of Savannah, and participated in the conflicts at Averyboro and Bentonville. The unit served as President Davis' escort and surrendered at Washington, Georgia, on May 2, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels George G. Dibrell and Mounce L. Gore, Lieutenant Colonel F.H. Daugherty, and Majors William P. Chapin and Jeffrey E. Forrest. He was buried in the West Cemetary where Eagle Creek is but was moved to Hatcher Hall Cemetary by the USCorp of Engineers due to Dale Hollow Resevoir.

Thomas Woodson West was the only member of the West family to join the Union Army during the Civil War. The rest of the West sympathies were with the South. The story goes that Thomas was on his way to join the Confederacy when he was captured by the Union forces and made to join their ranks. Thomas's son later said of his father, "He was a soldier in the Union Army and spent three years trying to free his uncle John Laffoon West's niggers." William WEST¹⁹⁶ was born on Jun 6, 1829 in Hopkins Co., KY. He died on Jun 16, 1909 in Mountain View, Aberta, Canada. William, the oldest son of Hardin West, planned to become a preacher in Missouri, but he heard of the gold rush in California and decided to go out there and seek his fortune. Apparently he was married at the time and had a small son. His wife did not want any part of going to California so they divided up their property and were divorced. William went to California, but was never learned whether or not he made his fortune. When he decided to leave California he came back through Utah on his way to Missouri. He joined up with a group of Mormon settlers and became a follower of that faith. He remarried and did not return to Missouri at the time. In the mid to late 1870's William made a journey back to Kentucky and Missouri. He kept a journal of all his travels on the way. In his journal is recorded all the names of his brothers and isters and his parents. He named Katherine Williams West as his mother and made records of all of her people. (his record contains birthdates, marriages and the dates of deaths that had occurred in his family. It did not give the date his father and mother were married.) William lived in Utah, Missouri, Idaho and Alberta, Canada. Parents: Hardin WEST and Katherine WILLIAMS.

Spring Creek Church and Cemetery land was donated by William Carroll West. As a matter of record, he built the church and as long as he lived he paid 90% of the preacher's salary. Carroll and his wife Elizabeth Peek West are both buried there. Located in the Spring Creek Community about 7-8 miles from Algood. There was a burial there in 1985 that is mentioned. There are minutes available (1802-1880) somewhere because they are referenced in the document this info came from, "Journeys, An Autobiography & More" Volume 2, by Hugh Shelby Lee, D.D.
