I promised to tell you the story of how the See clan got out west, so here goes.
To start, you may or may not know that William See fought in the war of 1812.
Shortly after the war he died of a serious flu like cold. In 1812, congress passed
a law which set aside 5.4 million acres for payment to the volunteers of the
war. Elizabeth Auxier See applied for her husbands share and was granted land
in Putnam and Schuyler Counties, Missouri. She took her two boys to Missouri
and assigned the land to them. Benjamin See's land was in Putman County and Nimrod
See's land was in Schuyler County.
Benjamin See farmed his land for awhile then went to Davis County, Iowa to farm
there. But after two years he sold the Iowa land and returned to Putman County,
Missouri. During the time Benjamin was in Iowa, his mother Elizabeth lived with
him. During the Civil War, Benjamin was quite vocal about how he favored the
South in the war which did not set well with some of the local "Boys."
As a result, his life and the lives of other members of his family were threatened.
In the middle of the night, they loaded everything they could into ox carts and
wagons and fled across the line into Iowa then headed west to Oregon. Benjamin
took the entire family. They left in such a hurry that Benjamin Franklin See
had to talk his lady friend into going along. They were married a few days later
in Iowa.
It took them four months to reach Oregon where they settled in the Grand Round
Valley of Union County, Oregon. They remained there until after the Civil War
was over, seven years as best we can figure. Then most of the family returned
to Sullivan County, Missouri, except for Benjamin Franklin See. He had became
a respected farmer in the valley and had already started a good sized family.
Francis Marion See also stayed. He had acquired land in the Wallowa Valley of
Wallowa County, Oregon and had also started a family. A third brother who also
stayed was Nimrod "Coon" See. He made a name for himself in the central
Idaho timber country, now know as Deary, Idaho.
After their parting, they never saw each other again, with the exception of Benjamin
Franklin See who visited his brothers and sisters in 1904. This was the first
time they had been together in thirty years. The trip to Oregon was a real adventure
for the family and they told their families about it many times and it is always
mentioned in their obituaries.
Benjamin See and his family returned to Missouri to find nothing because their
land had been sold for back taxes during the Civil War. But they all seemed to
manage as most went on to become respected farmers and ranchers.

George AUXIER143 died in 1824 in Montgomery Co., KY.138 He was born in Warren. PA.138 He served in the military.140 Private George Auxier served with the Virginia Line enlisting at Glade Hollow Fort. When the McClure family was abducted by Indians, Captain Alexander Barnett's Company took up pursuit. George Auxier was a member of this company when they successfully freed the McClure family. Captain Barnett personally placed the care of the McClures into the hands of George Auxier. George received pay for serving 17 days as a member of Captain William Russell's' Company of Fincastle County, Virginia. Later, he was paid for 18 days work in canoes and for 10 days of driving. This may have been hazardous duty because George received an extra 45 days of pay for this service. Soldiers completing their tours of duty went to the McCorkle's Store at New Dublin, Virginia to receive their pay. It is probable that George was discharged there because he is listed on the McCorkle's customer list. George Auxier was born in Pennsylvania in the 1750's. When he reached adulthood the best farm lands near his home were already settled. Searching for land of his own, he and his brother traveled the Wilderness Road into southwestern Virginia. George married Dorcas Shelly. They made their home on the Kanawha River in Virginia later moving to Montgomery County, Kentucky where he died in 1809.
Deposition of George Oxer taken before Joseph Colville at
William Conner's tavern in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, on
November 1, 1798: "I was furloughed in January of 1775
and on the 27th James Fowler, Thomas Pitman and myself
departed from the mouth of the New River and traveled in
company to the Salt Lick. I killed a buffalo that evening.
Fowler and Pitman were out and when they heard my shot
they came in and went to the lick that evening. It is a branch
of the Sandy River. The Indians had told us of a lick located
at the fork of a creek and we named it Big Paint. It is about
three miles from the Sandy river and twenty miles from
Fowler's lick. It was in 1777 when the people on the Clinch
River proposed to go to Salt Lick and make salt. James
Fowler and myself were together on Shelby's Creek in 1775
where we parted and he went on ahead. We met again below
the mouth of Paint Lick Creek and from there went on to
the mouth of the New River. This was the same time that
James Fowler was conducting the Indian called Morgan to
the mouth of the New River. I own ten head of cattle and I

James AUXIER140 was born in 1791. James Auxier was born in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Ewing in Kentucky about 1810. They made their home in Preble County, Ohio. In 1856 James and Elizabeth bought land in Warren County, Indiana. Several of their children moved to Warren County with them and others remained in Ohio. James died in 1873, he and Elizabeth are buried near Williamsport, Indiana. They were the parents of:

Michael AUXIER140 was born in 1751. Michael Auxier III will forever be known in the annals of family lore as "Bald Headed Mike." The story behind the nickname is bizarre and the stuff of which legends are made. According to Agnes Auxier, Michael was stalking deer at a salt lick near Ft. Blackmore, Virginia when he was surprised by an Indian who knocked him senseless with a tomahawk and relieved him of his scalp. Luckily, the wounds were not fatal. Michael survived the ordeal and wore a hat at all times thereafter to cover the horrible scars left by his encounter with the Indian at the salt lick.
