David Janse SWIERINGH112 was born between 1582 and 1612 in Holland. He died between 1639 and 1697. Extracted from FTM World Family Tree #9

Information of this family furnished by Dr. Oren Swearingen and Gail Vanderhoof. They do not agree entirely with the researcher who located the records in Holland. "The father of Gerrett was Hendrick Van Sweringen/Seringen b. 1614 in Holland. The only documentation to that effect is from a will of his sister, Mary van Sweringen." An extract of a letter to Jay E. Swearingen from Paul J. Rapteyn, Hilverus, Holland in 1933: The will or testament of Mary van Swearingen shows us that she left as a legacy to her brother, Gerrit Van Swearingen, now (as far as she knows) residing in the Marylands, in the Virginies near the fort of Baltimore, an account of two guilder. In another notarial document is mentioned that she, Mary, gives power of attorney in which she authorizes her brother Albert to sell her 1/5 part or shares in a fram (farm?) and belongings formerly the property of her parents- and situated in what the clerk in America called Remsterdwan/Beemsterdam. Garrett, Mary and Albert's father was Hendrick Van Sweringen/Seringen b. about 1614 in Holland." This came from Georgia Wilcoxen Lane who published a Wilcoxin Newsletter and quoted as above by Patricia H. Kohl, February 5, 1996. All of this from Gail Vanderhoof.

James Harrison SWIGGETT.1894 Swiggett Name:
The family knew him as James Harrison Swigart however, there is "more to the story." He was married as James D. Swiggett on 12/24/1891 in or near Liberty, Casey Co., KY per the online KY Marriages." Some time about 1900 he moved the family to McLean Co., IL. (my father William Earl Swigart was born in IL in either 1898 or 1900). Somewhere, somehow, for some reason, between then and 1908 or so, the family name got changed to "Swigart." My father knew of the family name had been Swiggett, but never knew himself as anything but Swigart. Dad's oldest sister, Tencie -b. 1892, evidently knew herself as a Swiggett because soon after the birth of her first daughter she started a family bible, and recorded herself as "Tencie Cloe Swiggett," then erased Swiggett and wrote Swigart over it (Swiggett is clearly visible under Swigart). I assume the name change came some time during or after the move to Illinois. Tencie was born in Liberty, KY, and the family must have moved around the turn of the century when she was about 8+ years old for her to have known herself as a Swiggett.

Swigart Name:
The first public recording of the Swigart name, that I have located so far, was in a Decatur, IL newspaper in 1919 when James got into an accident when his horses ran away on him and crashed his wagon into a cut of RR cars and broke a power pole. He is listed in the 1930 Census as James H. Swigart, the IL. death index has him as James H. Swigart, and was buried in Decatur as James H. Swigart. However, his funeral memoriam has his name James B. Swigart. I have no Idea where the B. came from. My dad said the name was changed because a teacher at school wouldn't believe anyone could have a name like Swiggett and changed it to Swigart. I have no idea if this is true or not (my dad could tell stories -- some were true, some were not) however, there were other Swigart's living in and around Decatur at the time so it is possible.

Spouse: Laura KING. James Harrison SWIGGETT and Laura KING were married on Dec 24, 1891 in Casey County, KY.
